Queen Elizabeth I was often pictured with an ermine as a sign of her virginity and virility. And she wore it SOOO much better than the Pope does. Hell, Elizabeth could wear anything! *damn bitch*

OT: When did the pope start to wear mainly white anyway? I know that it is fairly recent in Church history (the early and medieval popes looked like cardinals but with more bling) So when the hell did they all decide to dress like the Dominican Order?

@6:

The first Dominican pope was elected in 1276, and he naturally stuck with his habit. I think the trend just stuck.

The whole ermine/ prada shoes thing is just cos the new pope is a huge, ermine-wearing fag.

As an arch-conservative, one could even say reactionary, Catholic, Benedict is all about the dignity and trappings of his office. It is his aim to undo all of the reforms of Vatican II and take the Church back to his personal vision of "the good old days". He is just trying to bring the sexy back.

Sorry to be that whiney guy, but why "fag"? I don't buy the whole re-owning the word argument. Gay or straight, calling people a fag, be it ironic or not, perpetuates the use of that word as an insult. Not feeling it.
