The conflict in Georgia is actually of a war type nature. There is no actual war going on in Zimbabwe. Listing the two stories next to each other in that way is sloppy journalism.

@1 yes.

And involving Russia, this takes it to another level.

There are reports Russia is attacking Gori by air; Gori is outside that disputed region called Osettia. The capital of Georgia, Tbskbkt@$#%ilivanili or something, is getting refugees and the govt. offices are vacated.

But holy fuck the Georgians are actually fighting Russia.

Can't figure out the right or wrong of the disputed region. Some reports says it is part of Georgia, others call it a break away region under de facto Russian control etc. Russia says Georgia started it by attacking Russian "peacekeepers" in Osettia, Georgia blames Russia, etc.

Interesting fact: Georgia has this 1000 mile pipeline connecting Caspian sea oil to the Black sea and thus W. Europe. This pipeline is outside of Russia's control.
Russia does not like it that Georgia wants to be part of NATO.

Trumped-up causus belli??

Tbilisi is not that hard to spell.

Interesting seeing both Bush and Putin at the Olympics last night. They met and talked; presumably Putin said "you got nuthin', fuckhead, so don't even start".

And Mugabe is in Hong Kong, denied entry to China proper. Here's your opportunity, guys -- that "government" of his will topple like a house of cards if you just push it a little. The US should bomb his palace, just one little flyover "fuck you".

love how you sloggers are completely glossing over the Edwards bit. I bet if the same thing happened to a former Republican candidate you guys couln't keep your traps shut. But with everyone fawning over Edwards and the Dems you guys want to brush this under the rug...

Amazing how Edwards "comes clean" on a Friday night -- the opening night of the Olympics. A sorry state indeed.

@6 - As usual, I cringed every time NBC showed Bush. My personal (un)favorite was the shot of our fearless leader looking at his watch with an annoyed look on his face during the parade of nations.

I'm sure he was fidgety in school too.

Comment by RainMan

@7: John Edwards is not currently running for any political office nor is he presently serving in any capacity as an elected official. It doesn't mean his behavior doesn't suck--it does--but it does mean this story is less of the public's business than the story of, say, Larry Craig who has embarrassed the people of Idaho he represents.

Then there is the hypocrisy factor. Republicans have gone on and on for decades about their alleged moral superiority. Democrats have never made such claims. It's not that they cheat on their spouses more than Republicans (in fact, Bill Clinton and John Edwards notwithstanding, Democrats as a whole probably cheat less than Republicans), but they aren't pandering to holier-than-thou religious ninnies about how much they defend "family values" as they get caught with their pants down in one scandal after another.

I'm disappointed that this means the end of any role Edwards might have played in the upcoming Obama administration. Edwards more than many other politicians understood the consequences of the Republicans' war on the middle class and would have been valuable in fixing some of the damage done in the last eight years.
