Ummm . . . shouldn't the term be 'husband-swapping?' Or better yet 'partner-swapping?' Or even better 'partner-sharing' or 'intermittent poly-amorous dalliances of short duration?'

Why is the reference point the husband and his 'control' of and permission to 'swap' his wife for a different model.

I don't buy this.

I think what happens is, like the French, people don't get divorced even when they're sleeping with other people.

You can use statistics to prove anything, especially when you misuse them.

As to who is being swapped - it's probably a sliding scale, depending on who's involved.

Being openly poly, I've found that people feel safe confiding in me about their "arrangements". This is so common that I've come to believe that monogamy is almost an urban legend. Truly monogamous couples are, by far, the exception. Most people who aren't cheating have some sort of 'extras' allowed. It's pretty remarkable how many people are keeping the reality of their relationships totally under wraps.
