Thanks for Making Last Night’s Slog Happy So Fun

posted by on August 15 at 10:10 AM

Genuinely. The Hideout was hot and sticky with everyone crammed in there, but it was a great place to have the party, I’d say.

As promised, Chicago Fan was there along with Savage, Annie, Christopher, Bethany, Paul, Dominic… am I forgetting anyone? Books were flying everywhere, there were bags of tea and veggies, and lucky Abby won the Bumbershoot tickets!

I had a blast. I hope you did too. And now that it’s over, if you have any suggestions for next month’s Slog Happy, let’s hear ‘em. Location ideas? Up north, maybe? Ballard or Fremont? Want trivia? Bingo? Karaoke?

Slog Happy is your party, you tell us what you want.

I say Smith. We seem to be able to pull together even when the seating is retarded. Retarded like kids who are retarded. That's right, I'm making fun of down-syndrome. Hehe. Tards. Smith!

Last night I actually heard someone suggest having one in the U-District. As a resident of said neighborhood, I second the suggestion. Contrary to popular opinion, there are bars there that don't cater to students or drugged-up burnouts (although only a couple). And Kate's Pub is just across the freeway, I always thought that could be a good Slog Happy location.

I am very Slog Happy to report that the ultra cool bartenders at The Hideout were playing this ultra cool CD box set on the jukebox last night.

If Megan and/or Paul can arrange to have this even cooler CD box set playing on the jukebox next time, I may even wear my nametag for a change.

Megan? Paul?

As long as we're recommending CD sets: put the Labrador 100 in there, or all five volumes of The Sound Of Leamington Spa, and hold it north of the Ship Canal, and I'll come. Ballard would be awesome. Louie's Chinese!

Up north? You mean like north Capitol Hill? I'm not sure where Ballard and Fremont are, but I like the Smith idea. Or how about Rosebud?

Nice to meet you all, and I'll probably see you at the next one. :)

CAPITOL HILL ONLY

Lovely evening, I must say, although it was disconcerting to navigate the bus home while tipsy. But awesome to meet many of you, including Jubie (adorable!), Poe (sweaty!), Le Juif (call me if you ever wanna convert), boxofbirds (alliterative!), Amelia, Lawrence, Savage, Dominic, Math Graduate Student and more. And fabulous as always to see Ms. BJC.

Next time, bar in the back of Thaiku on Ballard Ave. One word: oolongtinis. (And aphrodisiac drinks for the pairs we've always wanted to match up.)

I am always for karaoke. Karaoke is awesome, especially if I can sing Morrissey and/or Falco.

Yeah, north of the cut would be cool. Capitol Hill's played.

Amelia, I'm sorry honey, but the other Amelia is a real human being. If you do not believe so, you should contact the local authorities, seeing how she's still conversing with other underage people to this day on MySpace. Chelsea Alvarez-Bell is also a real person. You're kind of insane, but nice nonetheless.

One of the years's best summer nights and you all were in a sticke bar - God - are you afraid of a good back yard with a pool or tub, drinks and weed - grill for cook anything real food - and bedrooms near if needed, wink wink ...

Party, shit, frat children stuff .... summer, outside, always and with water and total relax and unwind

I'll second Thaiku in Ballard. Very cool place, though the bar might be a little small.

For Fremont: Nectar or Tost please!

Go WAAAAY up north.

Grab your birth certificate or passport and come to Vancouver.

Steamworks on Cordova would be a great room for all of us.

I propose the Blue Moon, where the ghosts of Ted Roethke and Walt Crowley will haunt every glass, pitcher and hangover.

The Twilight Exit. Spacious, mellow (before 10pm) great food, a patio, cheap happy hour, parking.

Ziggity: Slog Happy has not been on Capitol Hill for three straight months (Shorty's, Maximilien, The Hideout).

I'd love Fremont or Ballard, as like most Cap Hillers I have no incentive to go up there most of the time. I also second trivia, but that might discourage as much mingling as happened last night.

I got waaaaay too drunk and then slept through Tropical Thunder. It was awesome though, as always.

I think karaoke would be fab, but not too many places to have it...

I suggest the balcony at the War Room next month, as it will be one of the last nice times of year, and we could all enjoy some sun.

But if you want to go up North, I'd say Kings Hardware in Ballard. Lots of seating and it has an outdoor area. There is also a karaoke bar across from Monkey Pub in the U-District and it has a pool table. Don't remember the name though...

Word to you mother.

I agree with Nectar or Tost in Fremont, but it might be fun to do a U Dist place too.

And the Amelia that showed up sure seemed like a real person to me, Mr. Poe. Very nice too.

Perhaps you shouldn't have drunk all those free Rainier beers I gave you so fast ...

Grats to Abby for the win of the Bumbershoot tix!

That one time when we had trivia was really fun, I'd definitely be down to do that again.

@26 - I think you're thinking of Dante's.

I want a Tuesday slog happy so I can actually show up. I work every Thursday at the Blue Moon.

Or, hey, we could just have one there. At least Paul would have fun raiding the stacks of books.

Oh, Scary Mary, don't they have google where you are? Labrador 100 = 4 volume set of everything released on Labrador Records of Sweden -- Acid House Kings, Radio Dept., Club 8, The Legends, The Mary Onettes, etc. etc. You know -- the GOOD stuff. The Sound of Leamington Spa is a series of compilations of obscure indiepop from the 80s and 90s -- mostly Brit. Pooh Sticks, Siddeleys, Nivens, Groove Farm, Emily, Candy Darlings.... Royal Leamington Spa is a town where John A. Rivers of WSRS Studios made some ridiculous percentage of the great pop records of the 80s (though not many of the ones on the comps).

Thus endeth today's Lesson in Irrelevancy.

Definitely should take advantage of the deck at King's Hardware before the wet and gloom return.

Posted by elenchos | August 15, 2008 11:49 AM

We should do it at Pies and Pints. It's pretty spacious in the back, it has good food, it has Hale's, it has a pool table, and it's on 12th and 65th. And hey, they even advertise in the Stranger!

Posted by Greg | August 15, 2008 11:51 AM

And after that, we should all go to the Slip in Kirkland.

I generally endorse any place that doesn't involve needing a car.

Posted by NapoleonXIV | August 15, 2008 11:57 AM

Sorry I missed it. Was hoping to stop in but had commitments that went too long elsewhere.

We should have it in Cal Anderson Park and have everybody bring a bottle in a brown paper bag.

@38, man I saw Jens at Nectar a few months ago and I loved him. Loved him before that, but was so pleased he lived up to it live.

Do YOU remember the riots in Gothenborg?

REPOSTED FROM PREVIOUS THREAD

Scary, I used some of that onion in my omelette this AM. YUMMY!!!

And I'm using the leeks in a vichyssoise -- nice and chilled for the hot weekend. Thank you so much!!!

Poptart, it was great to finally meet my online girlfriend. Even if you are 73% male.

Abby, tomorrow belongs to us -- roll on, EPL 08/09 season!!! And there was a woman there who does translating for FIFA...you need to meet her (Amelia). Somehow.

Leek, you're HOT.

Boxofbirds is a cutie, but his tats are probably fading and his ear plugs are starting to sag. Never mind -- I'd hit that.

My dear Constant, thanks for the book by the most pretentious ass on the planet. I'm going to read it, then use it as toilet paper.

Holden, as usual.

Savage, you're too kind.

Rhett, do you realize you finally helped me check the box next to "Have conversation about Albert Speer light displays and Riefenstahl's photos of them"? Thank you, sir!

Poe, Juif...words fail.

The restaya, god bless. It was fun! Wish I'd had more time.

war room deck might be a good idea...

@40 hmmmm, I think you must have mixed me up with someone else, or perhaps you met my evil tattooed and pierced twin "hexofbirds"... or was that a hipster dig? My jeans aren't that skinny, and I haven't had a PBR in at least a year....

You have an EVIL TWIN!?!

Ooooh, tell me more.....

War Room? um, where is that again?

@39, I don't remember the riots, but I remember painting a dirty word on your father's Mercedes Benz. "I got busted, and I used my one phone call to dedicate a song to you on the radio" -- best lyric ever. I got locked out of that Nectar show, but I've seen him several other times and he never disappoints.

I, being a muppet of good taste and blue fur, also naturally vote for the Blue Moon.

And here's something to consider: if my calculations are correct, next month's Slog Happy will occur on September 11.

Three words: TIN. FOIL. HATS.
