When I was a kid down in southern Indiana, cecropias and lunas would darken a room when they flew in front of a light. But I always thought they were beautiful, and no cause for tears!

They are huge and often mistaken for bats.

Moths are more wondrous than butterflies - definitely worth taming a fear for. Check out Joseph Scheer's "Night Visions | The Secret Design of Moths."

i take every new bird species i see in my neighborhood as proof that we're doing better.

i'd have been running for the internet to figure out what species it was.

Seeing new species living in an area should not be interpreted as the ecosystem "doing better".

It may be that because of climate change or human carelessness and habitat destruction, animal and plant types have been pushed into to different parts of the world.

Native species are often wiped out when new predators move in. For example, most of the animal and plant life in the Hawaiian islands is non-native, and thousands of native Hawaiian species are now extinct.

And let's not forget the most dangerous invasive species of all.... Man! We've killed off almost all the large animals in the world, which were not prepared for a predator like us.

MOTHRA WILL INVADE STRANGER OFFICES THROUGH OPEN WINDOW, FREAK OUT PUNY SUPERSTITIOUS STRANGER STAFF!

And no, I don't feel like letting it go.

Needless to say I did my best Janet Leigh impression for this beast... including *almost* ripping down the shower curtain on my way out.
