I love me some female athletes, but the excerpt is correct, I don't care if they win.
Furthermore, I don't care about women who'd be more attracted to me if I won. I'm sure there's some hard-wired yearning for the alpha-male in there somewhere, but that type of adoration is fleeting and impossible to sustain. Just ask anyone whose band just broke up.
Biology 101
This after Amanda Beard, the so-called famous athlete/actress/sex symbol who said "Ewwwww!" after it was suggested she might be interested in Phelps.
It's not about success so much as the fact that their necks are often wider than their heads.
The world would be a better, more humane place if women were like men in this regard, and didn't place so much emphasis on achievement. How much suffering and selfishness is visited upon the world by hyper-competitive men who, at bottom, are just trying to impress women?
This entry was written by a guy who just got passed over for promotion, so I may be a tad sensitive at the moment.
I don't know, man, I'd really like to fuck Misty May. She's damn tasty, gold medal and all. Also, that French swimmer that finished dead last after winning gold in '04. Basically, I'd like to fuck the hot chicks.
The numbers are probably skewed by the fact that all the men professing a desire to have sex with the Chinese women's gymnastic team are hauled off and "disappeared".
Heh, Napoleon. The older the men are, the further away they're hauled.
@5,
I don't know. Would you rather feel pressured to get plastic surgery, wear uncomfortable clothes, and spend much of your time and money primping yourself to appeal to women? It basically sounds like you want a world where women have no standards and men keep the same standards they have now. Very convenient for you.
I disagree with the article, female athletes are super hot. otherwise, i wouldn't watch women's beach volleyball. but the article is right about one thing, i'm not more attracted to a woman if they win...
keshmeshi, the world would be better if more women would go on a second date with a man who makes less money than they do. See, real feminists think about gender imbalance. Fake feminists think females are always better, always the victims, and never part of the problem.
It's probably just their overly developed shoulder muscles...if the men wanted to fuck someone with delts that big, why not just fuck the guy in the shower/bunk next to you?
(because they smell like men, etc.)
So in other words, Hillary Clinton should be able to get laid no matter what?
Women also go to ridiculous lengths to have sex with successful men who do NOT have huge necks, hyper-inflated deltoids, and Olympic gold medals; they fight to sleep with flabby old men too -- if they are rich. Isn't there a little Anna Nicole Smith (aka Mrs. J. Howard Marshall) in every woman?
i for one care not if lolo jones wins.

No surprise to me. Women are judged by their appearance, men by their abilities. Who do you think gets more respect though?
I'd do any of the guys on the men's gymnastics team, gold medal or no.
And not just our gymnastics team either.
Poor Lolo, I wanted to hug her after her fall...then fondle her supple buttocks.
@7 in two years they'd be old enough.... right...
um, this study does seem to be a display of the obvious: male success is a universal desirable whereas female success is sexually ambiguous. it's not fair, of course, but as elenchos points out, it's not fair both ways. women feel pressure to look guy, while guys feel pressure to achieve. both have negatives. while it's not fair for a woman in some ways, it is also not fair for a man in other ways. i don't like either system, and it certainly is unfair to woman in a more undesirable way.
At the risk of belaboring the obvious, success is not a big factor in popularity for women athletes because men are interested more in looks, and hotness is at best weakly correlated with gold medals.
Obv there is a huge difference between sex in the Olympic village and everywhere else. In the village the sex happens between attractive people with good bodies.
I grew up with quite a few female atheletes, including some who went on to win Olympic silver and bronze.
I don't recall their winning - or losing - as ever having been a turn on for the rest of us.
Except for gymnasts and equestrians. For some reason a woman who won at those seemed hot back then. Not really sure why, maybe it was living in the mountains.
It could have something to do with body signals - many top female athletes are probably not likely to be good reproductive choices at that moment - due to strict regimes and stress and lower body fat - and so maybe men are much more about that kind of thing?
Of course part of this is biology - but biology accounts for our drive to reproduce, not necessarily our search for a mate.
Also, Amanda Beard is kinda gross. One of the least attractive athletes to ever be singled out for her looks.
@23
Uh, Will, everything you say is true for people who have traveled to Europe, or for Canadians. But does it apply to the rest of us? Not really. We haven't had your opportunities to broaden our horizons. Try to relate and not judge, OK?
The actual interesting thing would be if male gymnasts who medal get laid. That would actually cut against the grain since they are all four feet tall. If they still can't get laid, then yes Virginia, Santa Claus really doesn't exist.
Will, tell me you were training for the biathlon.
Not counting the 2 hours of network TV coverage every night on NBC prime-timefor the past week, there's no way that an average guy will ever get some of that hot women's beach volleyball action with Misty May and what's her face.
@27 - nope.
But I will admit some of the BMX women's champions are hot - and some are not.
I think this is actually something that reflects positively on men - women are so awesome to us that our attraction isn't dependent upon a stupid athletic competition. We already know who moves us before the race begins.
But I actually I do find myself attracted to women who I perceive as heroic or brave - maybe it's just that sports has absolutely zero to do with those things.
@29: Yeah, damn. Sarah Walker of NZ, you can ride my bike any time.
@29: If Jill Kintner's boyfriend wasn't such a nice guy (who could also totally kick my ass) I'd be all over her.
This phenomenon could be more biological than sexist. Pheromones play a large part in sexual attraction and female athletes do not produce the same pheromonal profile as less athletic women. Women who train at this level become non-menstrual and produce a great deal more testosterone than average. To a straight man they would not smell sexually attractive because they actually smell infertile. Multiple studies have shown that women are much more likely to feel sexy and be sexually attractive to men in the days just prior to ovulation, which these star athletes do not do.
uh, I don't think the top woman athletes are necessarily attracted to the men anyway.
Get m'drift?
