Set Your Tie Dyes on Fire

posted by on August 12 at 13:40 PM

Has anyone seen a Hempfest poster? An ad? An anything? I hope they didn’t forget. It’s this weekend, so to give the old dame of pot rallies a little ink—err, a few pixels—here’s the poster for Hempfest this weekend.

hempfest_2008_poster.jpg

“I think of all my pot-smoking friends who don’t go to Hempfest because it’s not their culture,” says Rick Steves, travel writer and fearless pot-legalizing celebrity, who will be speaking each day at 4:20 p.m. “That seems like a real missed opportunity.” It is a huge missed opportunity. So if you have any tie dyes in your closet, be sure set them on fire before heading to Hempfest.

The theme, by the way, is industrial hemp. With all due respect to industrious hippies and a helpful crop, what an insipid theme. Industrial hemp? That’s like having the theme of gay pride be “Gay!” The theme should have been “Pot makes sex better.”

The subliminal theme is pretty crafty: “Hope.” The poster bears a striking resemblance to…

pot makes sex better? I'd love to see this explained because all my anecdotal evidence points to the clear opposite; it is a ponderous journey towards orgasm and you don't even get a lousy T Shirt.

I think it would behoove the pro pot movement to have more people at the helm that didn't smoke pot.

The "hemp as resource" argument is so silly. Adults want to be able to get high, legally, from a plant...why do we have to pretend it's about anything else?

Fugly poster.

@2, I'd definitely be more pro pot if pro pot people weren't more than mildly addicted malcontents.

The industrial hemp argument is idiotic because that is something that could be legalized and put into production while also retaining the illegal status of marijuana (and also sabotaging the efforts of growing potent pot).

Haven't seen any posters, which is surprising, since I live in Fremont.

But, FWIW, it doesn't make sex better for most people.

I agree with @3 and at @5 - if hemp were so sustainable and cheap to produce, why are the hemp shirts at the Ballard Market $40? Can you extract the equivalent of a schwaggy eighth from them?

i rather like ponderous sex.

I have never been able to actually score any actual weed at Hempfest.

Seattle has a hempfest? Since when? Seems odd for a city this closed and uptight.

@2 and 5, Rick Steves is hardly an addicted malcontent, he's more like stoned, Europhile Ned Flanders.

Oh, hey. We got some of those hemp diapers for daddy's little highball mixer, and they suck.

They're absorbent and all, but they are too fuzzy, lacking solid strands of fabric, for those Snappi fasteners to hook into. If you must get hemp diapers, then you'll have to make do with constantly stabbing that future human with safety pins. Go with cotton, my friends.

Rick Steves also has other interests besides pot advocacy and industrial hemp production. Sure he does it but he isn't defined by the fact he smokes pot or is an advocate for legalization.

Why I don't go to Hempfest? Two words: drum circles.

@14 which is exactly the type of person you were saying would help compel you to be more supportive of legalization efforts correct? Or does the pot advocacy person have to have a life dedicated solely to the purpose of marijuana law reform while remaining conspicuously sober?

It's true that hemp is a wonderful product with many uses and should be legal. And it is true that Medical Marijuana should be legal be cause of all its useful properties (I sure could use it for the pain I'm in. It works much better than the morphine I have to take every four hours.)

But in reality, I wish it were legal because I would rather get stoned than drunk.

Let me know when there is a "Pot for Recreation" rally and I will be there.

Dominic,
Yeah, at first glance of the Hempfest poster, I too thought of Obama's campaign logo. There certainly is a resemblance.

The worst thing about pot is that it produces a lot of annoying stoners.

Yeah, they need to call this thing I Wanna Smoke It Fest. All those people are joining together for the cause of hemp paper? No way.

Also, smoking pot is NOT free speech. It's smoking pot.

And yes, it should be legal. But most of the people who rally for decriminalization come off like NAMBLA guys asking for equal gay rights.

I've said it before, but I gotta paraphrase Chris Rock: I love pot but I can't stand stoners. And the stoners have got to go.

@16 Rick Steves is exactly the type of guy that needs to be a bigger part of it. But singling him out is a great example of the lack of Renaissance Men in the movement.

You folks are as predictable as a munchie stain on an avid Hempfester's tie dye shirt. Why is it that you non-tokers ALWAYS insist that Hempfest is ONLY about our want and need to get high?

You folks are the one's who put the whacky in the tobaccy. Those of us that, hell, I dunno, actually produce the dang thing can get high virtually any time we want. So I ask you, why oh why throw a Hempfest when we can light up in the park anytime we want?

How about people going to prison? How about people losing their custody rights? If it is all just a smoke screen to puff nugs then why bring all of this industrial hemp infrastructure to the park?

No, it is too easy for those of you who don't come to Hempfest to live within your little (tobacco, latte and alcohol drenched) bubbles so you can continue to be ignorant about our true mission. That way you can babble on self righteously all smug with the relentless and predictable drivel we hear every year.

Contrary to what you all project on this movement, it is really just about equality and human rights. Yeh, burn your tie dye if it makes you feel superior, but leave our Constitution alone please.

The pot movement could use a couple hundred Cap Hill hipsters and yuppies. Sloggers, where ya at?

BTW, you realize that Truckasauras is playing, right?

Bearded Lady, if hempfest isn't about smoking pot at the core of it why does it play such a large part in going to it?

If hempfest was just about hemp, and at that industrial hemp, you could have a good time without the pot or the pretense that this is about human rights.

C'mon kids, you're condemning people committing progressive action, concerned for your future as well as ppl wearing tie-dye. Hempfest is about Hemp, it's about reforming laws, it's about entertainment too because Cannabis (that's hemp kids ... pot weed grass dank hemp etc) is for Food, Fuel, Fiber, Medicine, Fun. Future.
Nothing is more boring than the under-educated. Please come down this weekend and change that.

HEMP IS environMENTALLY FRIENDLY

Bellevue Ave., allow me to tackle that question. if there were thousands of people at Hempfest that had not bathed, would you suggest that Hempfest is ABOUT not bathing?

The whole reason we throw the fucking hempfest is to protest the laws. Could one not consider deliberately breaking the law at a political rally an act of civil disobedience? Just because it may be relatively pleasurable ya'll just cannot wrap your tine, freeze dried and shrunken skulls around the fact that Hempfest is the LARGEST and most SERIOUS and most SOCIALLY RESPONSIBLE pot rally that ever was. You will not understand any of t hat however unless you peruse our website, read our program, listen to our speakers, witness the speaker panels, take in the girth and the magnitude of the energy present in the park. No, we will still be thrown against a wall of stereotypes, we will be relegated to the worn out and faded counter-culture references or worse yet, the Cheech-and-Chongification that we get. Have you noticed the $29 billion dollars of your money wasted on this foolishness? Have you seen the people whose lives have been destroyed by these insipid, criminal pot laws? Oh that's right, you don't care. When we have won all of the criticism will be moot. until then, bring it on, because we are an emission from God.
