Really, Truly Disgusting

posted by on August 22 at 9:33 AM

rsz_salmon1.jpgLocal (and national) seafood-hero Jon Rowley writes on Gourmet.com about the dangers of eating raw salmon—namely, the possibility of ending up with a 9-foot tapeworm.

Salmon for sushi, as Rowley notes, is almost always frozen first, which kills the tapeworm larvae.

More on the fish tapeworm here, including a neat life-cycle diagram from the CDC.

I can think of a number of folks who should aspire to get a 9-foot tapeworm.

I'd seriously love to get one (maybe not 9m...), just to lose a couple pounds. I think if you lose enough it won't all come back, will it?

I mean, what if we could tame our tape worm overlords, using them instead of lap band surgery?

I helped load that fiberglass Salmon onto a truck at the Great Peninsula Future Festival. There's a mural on the inside, if you dare to climb inside.

Incidentally, a different parasite that is common in salmon will kill your dog if he or she eats raw salmon, so never give uncooked salmon, even lox, to a dog.
