Monologue books are the work of Satan. I read through every one of those in the UW drama library and they were universally terrible. First, it's like they're written just to be read, not performed. Each one is too concerned with having a clever 'hook' and a little surprise ending to do anything dramatically. Second, because they're in a book that says "Monologues" on it, every director has heard all of them about five times each before it's even published. I am convinced that Monologue books are not actually intended to help actors get parts; rather, they are a trap for inexperienced or unwary actors so that they can be weeded out easily and give a better chance to more savvy actors who do better research.
