Protesters, Protesters, Everywhere

posted by on August 24 at 13:57 PM

As suggested below, there’s lots of street action today in Denver, and a heavy police presence. But no WTO-style violence, no ‘68-style madness, and no arrests, at least as far as I’ve seen…

The Stranger won't get through the week with out going on a snarkfest on these protesters.

Remember when Dan supported the Iraq war because he though it would be the unexpected thing to do. Same thing here.

And

Hey! Remember when good ole Dan posted that story about the obese woman who accidently killed a baby by rolling onto it when they were sleeping? Wasn't that a fucking hoot! Good ole Dan, if something bad happens to him or his it's a tragedy. But anyone else, if there maimed or killed or suffer some other great calamity, well, as one of Dan's fans once wrote to him on Slog: "it's all fair game Dan, you taught us that."

Pathetic motherfuckers!

What's up with all the pink?

As much as I'm a proud Democrat (and on my way to Denver tonight), thank GOD someone's shouting FIRE in this crowded FIRE. And doing so theatrically.

Eli,
This somehow makes no sense. I can appreciate them protesting at the Republican National Convention and they probably will but not at the DNC. The other thing is that the Iraq War has actually taken a turn for the better whether one endorsed it or not. The poster of "No War On Iran" is also perplexing. Finally, someone questioned "Why all the pink?" That color seems more befitting of a gay rights rally. While the demonstrators are peacefully marching (so far), it still doesn't look that good for the Democrats "unity" theme.

Because Republicans could give a fuck what a bunch of protectors think, lark. At least with the Democrats somebody might be listening. Your friend Mr. Google can sort out your other questions.

"Grow pumpkins! Not war!" I just don't think this is going to catch on as an anti-war slogan, but I could be wrong.

Seeing Denver in this context makes me go 'awww'.

"Pink" has already been claimed for breast cancer awareness...

If you are going to make a statement, consult Pantone and get a unique ident...

Wait, what?...

Oh, this just in...

It has nothing to do with individuals anymore...

Carry on, lemmings!!

The pink is for Code Pink. It's part of a long tradition of women protesting war, but with a 21st century makeover.

#1 and #9-two comments out of nine that actually show some knowledge and insight. That's an awful high percentage for Slog. #2 is traditional Slog. Attempted wit that shows nothing but ignorance. 38 a complete failure at wit or communication. #6 Nice try. Now back to eating that asshole.

Pinkos and hippies. Looks like the DNC to me.

@10 and, uh, @11: I made no attempt at wit. I just wanted to know what all the pink was about without having to look it up myself. Because I'm lazy. And now I know (thanks annie)!

If you're going to critique a Slog comment string, you might want to pick one that isn't dead boring. All this fantastic material and this is what you choose to work with?

In any case, assholes are delicious.

The protesters will be at both conventions and they're at the Democratic convention because these hardcord peace activists don't believe either major political party is doing enough to stop the war. They are a minority faction. An outlier. They don't know how to communicate their message in a way to be convincing so they hold signs that say stuff about pumpkins. Stuff that holds largely no cogent connection to the issue at hand.

This is what democracy looks like:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2008/aug/25/democrats2008.barackobama

About 2,500 FBI and police will be deployed around the convention centre, a secret service spokesman said.

The city's air space will be closed for the duration of festivities. Roads will be blocked off and transit stations shut. The entire Denver police force has been put on standby and the authorities are also pressing prison guards into convention duty.

Delegates are being encouraged to get around on communal bicycles, set up in stands around the city for rent.

Organisers had initially billed Obama's speech accepting the nomination as a public event, promising to give away half the tickets in the stadium to local Coloradans, rather than party grandees. But a cash crunch has compelled the organisers to give away box seats at the stadium to the biggest donors.

Those in prime viewing spots on Thursday night will include the Republican billionaire Tom Golisano, owner of the Buffalo Sabres ice hockey team, who donated $1m to the convention. Big donors are also being invited to attend a post-speech reception where they will meet Obama.
