Miss Buffalo Chipgate

posted by on August 5 at 13:02 PM

We’re wasting our time beating up on John McCain for suggesting that his leathery ol’ wife should participate in a topless/bottomless beauty pageant.

Yes, Obama couldn’t say it—but then Obama isn’t a notorious ladies man and adulterer that dumped his first wife when she went and got all ugly and shit.

More to the point, and setting aside the issue of race, people think it’s cute when the elderly pretend that they’ve still got it and say mildly racy (not racist!) things about their leathery ol’ spouses. These comments would be interpreted very differently if Obama made them not because Obama is black (or a Democrat) but because Obama is young and virile and his wife is a total fucking fox. If Obama had suggested that Michelle enter a topless beauty pageant we would be forced to actually conjure up mental images of Michelle taking part because Michelle could. (And she could win.) When McCain says it about Cindy, we don’t picture Cindy entering the contest because she couldn’t and, on the off chance that she did, she certainly wouldn’t win it.

People don’t perceive sexual heat, or sexual tension, in McCain’s marriage and therefore they don’t perceive any in his comments. The people in that crowd—and the people watching the clip on YouTube—interpret them like this: “Hey, the old dude still thinks his old wife is hot—awww, isn’t that cute?”

Democrats and progressives straining to make an issue of this by playing “if Obama said it!” are making a mistake. We’re not the party of idiotic, knee-jerk prudery and we look ridiculous when we pretend that we are.

Dan,

Have you seen the weathered old hags that hang out at Sturgis? They make Cindy look like a teenager.

You know, I was all ready to get on McCain's ass about this one but . . . you're right. Thanks, Dan.

the if-so-and-so-said-it style of political "analysis" is completely, utterly useless. just stick to things that actually happen, people. there are plenty of things to talk about without making shit up and then guessing how people would react if it actually happened.

Well, his mistress-turned-wife is something like 22 years younger than he is.

But he's still older than Bob Dole was when he was too old to be President.

Of course, McCain probably forgot about that, just like he forgot about cheating on his wife and two young girls back during the Crimean War.

Dan,

The issue isn't about "prudery" - it's about the double standard reporting by our so-called "liberal media."

You know damn well if Obama had said that, the Drudge siren would be flashing and Cable News would be in "breaking news" overdrive.

First: However unnervingly immobile Cindy McCain's face may be, she's still a very attractive woman and not all that old. You wouldn't say that about a man of the same age, so don't be a jerk.

Second: It's still fucked up that McCain said it while she was standing right there (if indicative of just how retrogressive and antifeminist he is).

No one is offended on behalf of Cindy McCain because no one respects her so no one really cares that her husband doesn't respect her either.

I honestly think that McCain neither expects to win or even wants to win. I think he's going through the motions.

He didn't realize the implications of what he said. He just got the line from a handler. "You liberals" are so mean.

Cindy was born in 54, McCain in 36. I'm counting 17-18 years difference.

18, 22, whatever, it's not like John McCain fathered an out-of-wedlock child when he first was a midshipman who grew up and was the same age as Cindy.

Oh, wait ...

Mind you, she wasn't a beer heiress.

@12 - I hope you're right on that last part. I've been living in a state of contant anxiety these past few months, just wishing November would come and be over with so I would know if I've got to get my bags packed and move to Canada or not.

I won't be satisfied by this election until I see John McCain rapping in an ad, ala "rapping grannies", to get, you know, mad votes from the youth.

That ain't the point. The point is that McCain tries to play to this Christian Conservative base one one hand and on the other he's joking that his wife should get publicly topless, etc. It's hypocrisy, not obscenity. The same mechanics that work against Larry Craig.

Dan,
It has nothing to do with prudery and everything to do with respect. To use your wife as a sex-object punchline to get a chuckle and a wink from a bunch of beer-fogged bikers and their bikini-clad ol'ladies shows such a total lack of respect for her and begs the question of how much respect can he possibly have for women he isn't married to or doesn't know ?
Since his campaign wants to smear Obama's character as its primary strategy I think exposing McCain's lack of character at every opportunity is useful and worth a click or two of the mouse to keep it alive.

@16: Good fucking question.

He was at the Sturgis, SD rally in part because the upper plains/rockies states are in play for the first time since 1964. Not so much SD, but certainly ND and MT.

That's the story here, not some comment about his still kinda-hot wife.

(Also, contra the always-insufferable ECB, saying your wife is still hot is not an insult.)

Y'all are nuts. Cindy's hot. She takes it up the pooper, and likes it -- begs for it. You can see it in her eyes.

And no, I don't feel like letting it go.

@19- Exactly. Honestly, I don't care at all if he's at Sturgis, or if he really, really wants to watch the topless/bottomless contest. But it does reveal an element of his character, that he'd make a joke in front of a crowd that works specifically because his wife is too old to be considered attractive enough to objectify.

That said, I'd rather not see it covered the way that it would be if Obama made the statement. It's not an actual issue, just another in a pattern of shitty things he's said that reveal some of his attitudes about women.

McCain hasn't thought his wife was hot for quite some time. John to Cindy ca. 1992, in front of witnesses: "At least I don't slather on the makeup like a trollop, you cunt." So his current on-the-face-of-it left-handed commendation of her assets is all the more malicious for its hypocrisy.

It's not a waste of time to find narratives to trash McCain. And since there is a narrative out there, a real one, of how he dumped wife number one and previously, publicly insulted wife number two, (see one of the previous comments for details)it's appropriate to bring it up. Again, and again, and again.

We are afraid to bring up character issues. We need to stop that. John McCain is a misogynistic asshole. Lather, rinse, repeat.

I wonder how many "tail hook" conventions John McCain attended. Face it, McCain revels in debasing women. Some people take a dump in the morning, John McCain takes a dump on women once a week for fun.

Paid for by the "Tailhookers for the truth"

There probably won't be much political mileage in this, but he's still being a very disrespectful to his wife.

The joke is extra cruel because she clearly, clearly tries very hard to maintain her looks and still be attractive. If she had been an a matronly asexual type, the joke would have still have been tasteless but closer to funny.

Now it's just ridiculous. In no other Westernized, democratic, affluent industrialized country does a potential Head of State say shit like that about his wife. Stay classy, McCain.

I'm really not a knee-jerk prude but it's disgusting that a Presidential candidate talks like that about his wife and she just stands there and smiles and waves like an automaton. Of course if she didn't react to being called a trollop and a cunt I guess being Miss Buffalo Chip is a step up for her. She is an excellent Stepford wife! I would have beaned McCain on the head with a buffalo chip and think the press should too. Why is sexism tolerated because they're old and cute??? I think he should be called out for being the old, sexist, lecherous man that he is!!!

Sorry Dan but there is no longer any age where a man can get away with being a lecherous, sexist creep. I'm sad to think you believe being old and cute gives you a free pass!!! Did I ruin your future plans?

"..dumped his first wife when she went and got all ugly and shit"
Is it cool to trash an innocent woman in such a public way?
Because you're a homo you have the right to say anything ?
Why ?
Because you got your ass kicked in junior high?

Grow up.

I cannot believe you people think it's a laughing matter when a candidate for the United states offers up his wife to Beer belly, pot smokeing, sexist bikers for their pleasure in a topless Buffalo chip Beauty contest! Just how low can you people and mccain treat women? Useing women for sex objects is not a joke or a laughing matter! This contest in sturgis leads to lude sexual acts on stage, as well as often some women end up bottomless and topless. Women have fought being used, treated and mistreated like this for years! Than we have a old man running for president who thinks it's great fun to abusively offer his own lady up for such embarrasment is beyond indecent behavior!

Don't feel sorry for Cindy. She knows exactly what she's doing. She's making a play for White House prestige and is apparently willing to endure insult, hypocrisy, humiliation and embarassment from her husband to get it. Essentially selling her soul for the off chance of being First Lady. Rich as she is, what else could she possibly be getting out of her ties with that old fool? If McCain keeps selling his so blatantly, Cindy's off chance is no chance.

Cindy McCain may be 50-plus and bleached and artificial, but she's still an attractive woman who 90 percent of 25 year-olds would bang. Michelle Obama is attractive but not hot.
