It may work to pull in some of those idiots but think about this.

What do older, strong feminist women (the type we're supposedly talking about) when an old man surrounds himself with young beautiful women?

Both were models, his new VP was runner up in the Ms Alaska contest.

I say we spread the "Old man surrounded by young beautiful women" line. I like it. It's catchy. It's just the sort of idiot line these people feed on.

She has a baby, named Trig (can we hope that all of her children are named after math disciplines?) born last April. If she was really a good Republican, she'd be home with him. Right? Isn't that what they're always saying?

I think this is the last ditch effort for the MILF-lovers vote.

Odoomba-Bidet is kaput!

McCain just torpedoed them.

http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/08/29/palin.republican.vp.candidate/

She has been named chair of the National Governors Association's Natural Resources Committee. That panel is focused on legislation to ensure that federal policies take state priorities into account in agriculture, energy, environmental protection and natural resource management.

She is a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association and takes part in two of Alaska's popular pastimes -- fishing and hunting.

The governor's biography says Palin's other priorities have been "education and workforce development, public health and safety, and transportation and infrastructure development."

Wow. What an interesting choice. Obvs intended to pick up some PUMAs. Might even work a little bit.

Kinda creepy that she looks like a trophy wife next to him. It might send the right visual to old white guys, but decidedly wrong visual to feminists (the very people this choice is intended to appeal to). Especially since he already has one trophy wife.

I don't buy it. It's a red herring. Who could imagine her as president when he keels over before 2010. But come to think of it - it would make a great movie script! Former mayor of a tiny town and newly elected govenor of a state where almost no one lives, gets picked as VP running mate for PR purposes, then suddenly becomes president when the old coot drops dead. This is just disgusting and offensive. She was not selected because of her vast experience or political capital. She was selected to try and pick up Hillary supporters. She is being used as an adornment and a tool and is not being treated as a partner and an equal. That alone is offensive enough, but add on top of that that she is a "lifetime feminist" who is anti abortion and every single former Hillary supporter who was thinking of voting for McCain should stand up, slap that old white bastard in the face, and tromp right back to the Democratic Party. To do any less would be a disgrace.

What a supreme joke. What a disaster. Who the hell thought this one up?

And don't forget: Many women - mostly conservative women - have a real problem with other women. They don't like to see other women "get ahead". That explained a lot of the hatred for Hillary. How do you think they are going to take this?

What type of woman wouldn't give up her career to take care of her down-syndrome child? Do you want this woman running the country?

Will Hillary let another woman even stand the chance of becoming the first female president (given that McCain predates the constitution)?

Will Hillary let THIS woman (who is totally unqualified, compared to HRC) become the first female president?

And wouldn't Hillary be the ultimate person to campaign against Palin? She's a woman, she's been closer to being president than any other woman, and she cannot be accused of being sexist.

eh, i don't think this is going to help mccain much. he's trying to break the stereotypical repub image too much (lieberman, femaleVP, etc...), when he likely needs the support of the xtianists. if they have no one else to vote for (3rd party?) this might work out as a good strategic move.

but why all the hate for palin? should she not be a repub VP just because she's an attractive woman? seriously. even if mccain wins -- not something i'm hoping for -- there is a bright side: we are long overdue for a woman to be POTUS or VPOTUS.

either mccain is actually not so sexist after all, or he is evil but realizes that in this day and age woman can no longer be ignored.

@46:

The perception is that she was picked solely because she was a woman. We're overdue for a country where being female doesn't hurt your chances of being President, but that doesn't mean being female should help you, either.

Oh no! I've played into their hands!

It's not that she's too attractive to be intelligent (if you consider that look attractive, which I certainly do not), it's that the obviousness of her only qualification being her vajayjay is pathetic. There is going to be a huge age divide in this election. Young people are overwhelmingly for Obama and the elderly are tilting toward McCain. It may be a bit difficult for those of us who grew up post civil rights and post second wave feminism. To us, race and gender are non-issues. This is not the case for the elder generation. It is unwise for us to underestimate the importance of race and gender for those over 65.

Another reason the younger generation is less affected by this issues is that we know, without any doubt, that we will see a female president in our lifetime. We are so certain of this fact, that we are free to vote for the best candidate. We don't have to sacrifice our values to see that glass ceiling shattered, because to us, it already has been. It is only a matter of time. Those in their twilight years do not have this luxury. They may not be here in 2016. Don't underestimate how important it may be to a 70-year-old first wave feminist to see a woman in that spot before she passes on. Add this to the fact that McCain is one of them and Obama is a young, arrogant, black man and you have motivation far more potent than medicare.

The scariest thing is that people over 65 vote at an unimaginable rate. The only silver lining in that for Obama and the democrats is that elder voter turnout can't really increase. It's pretty much maxed out. Meanwhile, youth voter turnout has enormous room to grow.

This is an oversimplification, but I believe it is going to come down to this: demographics will decide who people vote for. Turn out will decide who wins.

This could be of great benefit to McCain and should not be so lightly dismissed. Her Wiki bio really makes her sound like a winner. The only thing the fundies won't like about her is that she effectivley granted same-sex partner benefits to Alaska state employees but that will play well with Republican moderates. This is going to be played up as another maverick move and could result in some bounce. She is definately not a Cheney.

That's the reason they give me when I ask why they're not backing him. He's too old, his health is too poor, and they don't think he'll survive his first term, let alone a second.

I realize I'm living in a pretty liberal pocket of the country, but I don't think these people I've been talking to are an anomaly. I think you underestimate the elder generation.

I am a diehard Democrat and a liberal. I also happen to be from Alaska (making my political views a definite minority). I support Obama and will continue to do so because of what he represents.

That being said, let me say this: Palin is a BRILLIANT choice by the Republicans. I've witnessed first hand Palin's rise to power and I have to tell you she is an incredibly charismatic person. I don't agree with her social conservative views, but she stood up to the good ol' boys in her own party and trounced them. No one thought she could. In the governor's race she defeated Democrat Tony Knowles, a man who had already served as governor of Alaska for two terms in the '90s. No one thought she could beat him.

Everyone in Alaska, whether they like her or not, has watched her amazing rise and I've had countless conversations with other Alaskans(republicans and democrats) where the possibility of her being U.S. President was discussed. I fully expected that one day Palin would run for president.

Now judging by some of the posters here, I expect you think because she is from my "hick" state she is irrelevant. Hmmm. Bill Clinton is from a "hick" state and prior to becoming president he had served as governor of Arkansas.

I'm not going to dignify the sexist remarks on this thread, because whether republican or democrat, Palin deserves respect for everything she has accomplished. And believe me, she IS smart and politically she is very savy.

Final note - a lot of the men I know up here voted for Palin for governor because, as they put it, "she's hot!".

Did any of you stop to consider that MAYBE MCCAIN PICKED HER TO WIN OVER MALE VOTERS WHO WEREN'T DECIDED RATHER THAN HILARY DEMOCRATS!!?? Even if that wasn't one of the reasons he picked her, I think it will be a factor. Let's face it, many voters (both men and women) vote for trivial reasons and looks are part of the equation when you vote for the person.

I think we as Democrats really need to stop scoffing at McCain's choice and take Palin seriously. The ruling members of her own party here in Alaska didn't take her seriously, and she stomped them.

Believe me, Palin as McCain's running mate is a real threat to Obama/Biden.

I always get offended when people from small town shit holes (or at least my experience with them) tell me how to live my life. I know it goes both ways, and that's why I don't live in a small shit hole town (anymore). So it's aggravating to think that someone who was a mayor of a town of 8000 people knows my experience of someone with an advanced degree trying to make it work in the "big evil city".

If you're concerned about HER experience, why would you not be MORE CONCERNED about Obama's experience? What has he done beyond give speeches? He was a senator for less than 150 working days before deciding to run for president. He hasn't DONE anything. Identify 3 accomplishments beyond being nominated, traveling the world, and slamming any republican initiative?

Regardless of the population of Alaska or the town where she was Mayor, Palin ran the show AND has an 80% approval rating. Whether you agree with her views or not, she fights for her principles and apparently succeeds in her fights.

I'm guessing those of you who can only focus on her appearance and age and assume that's what others are going to focus on either don't vote or aren't old enough to vote anyway. Happy election.
