I liked how the media reported the mangled syntax. Somewhere, an editor in the lefty MSM is cackling.

When I read it, it struck me as oddly "adolescent girl" in tone -- "Oy my god, I'd like, totally date him, just, it's, like, I don't know..."

I wonder what Pastor Dobson will have to say about this?

I can't believe you totally missed the second part of that quote, where McCain says he would not consider Bloomberg for VP because he's "pro gay rights". So for McCain, it's cool if you're a baby-murdering abortionist, but fags are right-fucking-out!

Well, seeing as how the Republicans' electoral success is entirely due to real Republicans holding their noses while their candidates pander to the Christian garbage, and that coaltion of the willing is falling apart, and McCain knows perfectly well that the kook wing of the party isn't enough to win, he's just trying to find a way to keep the tattered remnants together here.

It IS a disagreement that keeps shaping our national politics in very ugly ways. I am tired of it being such a big player in presidential nominations and I'm glad that McCain is minimizing it.

(That said: I can't help but hope that his own people will turn on him like hungry wolves if he selects a pro-choice candidate, and he'll lose miserably).

Hopefully this means that the Southern Strategy era is drawing to a close. If this wedge issue is losing its effectiveness the GOP might have to run on its actual policies, which screw most of the working class evangelicals who have been one-issue voters since abortion became the only issue anybody talks about.

For the record, it's no secret that Sen. Obama is considering an anti-choice candidate for VP (Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine). The Dems have indeed, opened their eyes to alternative views on abortion rights. Their platform remains ardently pro-choice but there are more anti-choice Dems being elected especially from the South. Stridency on the issue really isn't an option for both candidates.

@10 - becasue a foetus is arguably not yet a human life while a spotted owl is quite tautologically a spotted owl.

@9 - It's not out of character for a democrat to treat abortion as an issue about which we can agree to disagree. It is out of character for a republican to do so.

Hey, if it makes the fundies not vote for him, congrats.

His running mate should also support gay rights. Hell, his running mate should just be gay. I mean, gay rights are just a disagreement, too.

Then the fundies can go vote for Romney or Buchanan or whomever. Hell, I'll contribute to their campaign if it helps. Why not? TIFP.

The new Democratic platform is a move closer to the middle as well. Interesting to see how that might play out. Evangelicals are finding a warmer welcome in the Democratic party than they ever have, and I don't see how that can help McCain.
