Laying Low

posted by on August 28 at 7:59 AM

Typically the other party’s nominee lays low during his opponent’s convention. It’s considered, you know, decorous. But Rove Republicans—currently running John McCain’s sleazy campaign (but don’t ask the tetchy old man about it)—don’t do decorum. McCain has decided on his VP pick, and “the name may leak at 6 PM,” says Drudge, with “some sort of confirmation at 8 PM.”

So McCain may announce his VP pick while Barack Obama delivers his acceptance speech in Denver tonight. No doubt if someone were to ask McCain why he’s doing this, McCain would respond that for five and half years in Vietnam he couldn’t announce anything to anyone because he was a prisoner of wocka wocka wocka.

Here’s hoping Obama camp is planning some payback, some attention-drawing announcement or stunt, timed to land during McCain’s acceptance speech.

In 2004 didn't Rove pull some Pakistani "terrorist" out of his closet during Kerry's DNC speech?

Surely the Obama campaign has tv commercials attacking any of the usual suspects ready to roll, right? Right?

(An aside: Is that really Janeane Garofalo in ad that appears next to these comment sections? Odd.)

One other thing. This Time magazine interview confirms it: John McCain is an asshole.

Obama is at 8 Denver time, VP confirmation would be at 8 eastern. That's 2 hours before.

Noone cares who McCain's VP pick is, anyway.

Oops, just followed the link to Andrew Sullivan and realized the Time article why Dan made the "tetchy old man" reference.

Please shut up now, LDP. Okay, will do.

#2, why are you seeing ads? Don't you block that shit?

What a stupid idea. The networks aren't going to preempt an Obama speech to give excessive coverage to that. At best, it'd wind up being a little note on the CNN ticker.

Depends. If McCain can rally 70,000 of the GOP faithful into the U of P stadium tonight for the announcement, MAYBE the media will consider it newsworthy.

But, if it's just McSame & his V.P. nod standing in front of an In-&-Out Burger with a handful of residents from the nearest retirement home, um, not so much with the "live action news reporting" would be my guess.

actually a smart, rovian move - stop obama from dominating the news cycle, keep your candidate in the media space at all times.

@brad

I came in here to say the same thing. A category 3 hurrican is currently scheduled to hot NOLA at about 8pm Monday. That'll fuck with the RNC.

no, the Dems are waaaaaay too polite to do anything like that...

Here's an idea for Obama during leadup to the GOP convention: travel to each of McCain's homes and give a speech on the economy in front of each.
Seven days - seven homes - seven points toward fixing the Republican Recession.

I think it will back fire. Tomorrow morining, people will be saying, "McCain picked a VP? Really? When did that happen? Who gives a fuck? BUT DID YOU SEE OBAMA LAST NIGHT?!?!??!"

Mike in Mo for the win!

Yeah, trying to step on Obama ain't working - even Fox and the WSJ are barely giving McSame a mention and they WORK for the Reds.

@10,

Seems like every McCain event up to now has been of the In-n-Out Burger variety. Why's he going to change now?

Ill spoil the surprise and announce it right now: it's Lieberman.

@18

It's not just Gustav. TS Hannah is expected to hit Florida as a hurricane mid-week.

A couple more hurricanes - paired with ads of inept Bush/McCain response to Katrina - could push Florida over to Obama.

I've never been clear why Democrats haven't hit the Republicans on FEMA, given that Bush wanted to do away with the agency entirely in his first year. Considering this fact, I particularly can't believe that Kerry lost Florida in 2004. Because the entire fall in Florida is a giant nightmare because of hurricanes, it seems to me that this is the issue that could make Florida blue permanently.

@4 I skipped the stealth Sullivan link, naturally, so thanks for the TIME link. Wow. McCain knows he's finished, doesn't he? Everything he's been saying and doing for months makes that more and more clear. He's obviously not and he obviously is incapable of running his own campaign now.

How many of his children is it forbidden to speak of or to? Five? Meanwhile, those cute Obama girls are everywhere being part of a happy family.

This election was over months ago. The 2006 landslide overcame Republican election theft then and the 2008 landslide is going to totally overshadow that. Who knows what our corporate overlords have up their sleeves next, but this round is over.
