Slog - Comments on J.P. Patches Gets a Statue!

Next to another terrible sculpture! Poor Fremont. (Though surely the bronze runners at the exit of the West Seattle Bridge take the prize for Worst Figurative Sculpture in Seattle.) Here's the brief item in today's Seattle Times. Celebrate with the governor at 1 pm on Sunday!...

If "Waiting For The Interurban" was actually sited on the street that the Interurban went down, I'd agree with you, but it's ninety degrees out of alignment (the Interurban crossed the canal) so I'm going to have go with that as worse than the West Seattle ones. The West Seattle ones are slightly more inaccessible, too, which means they are less often dressed by the natives, which is really tiresome. Fremont is the bad art center of the universe, after all.

J.P. Patches meant a lot to kids that are adults now, but show me a kid that not only likes clowns, but REALLY REALLY old clowns. Why doesn't Stan Boreson have a friggin statue or bench or bronze Victrola or something? His Christmas album is classic in Ballard.

Comment by Patch's Pal #10267

Oh for fucks sake.

Chris Wedes & Bob Newman have done more for this community and the three generations of kids who grew up with them than any 1,000 of you pathetic, whiny poseurs. And even at their advanced age I bet they can still pound your sad, sorry asses into the ground with one begloved hand tied (using one of Boris S. Wart's famous slipknots) behind their backs.

When one of you smart-mouthed little punks can claim 28 consecutive years as the longest running ANYTHING, and even to have helped a mere 1/10th of the number of kids they have over their careers, then get back to us, maybe we'll dredge up a little "respect" for your noted accomplishments.

In the meantime, we'll be reciting our Patch's Pal oath, drinking our Darigold milk, and celebrating with J.P., Gertrude and the gang.

The rest of you can fucking piss off.

loved the whole thing back then

many big ones for J P

and I liked being a kid in the old
Seattle too - back then this town was working class - not now, kids are like the luggage of the middle class

growing up now, I would run away for real at 12 to get away from all the over parenting gush and control

I have a special place in my heart for JP and Gertrude/Ketchikan/Gorst/Boris/Mrs Smith/Super Chicken/Swami - dunno if I can make it down there but it would be cool to see, artistic value or none.
Yep, easy to wax sentimental about the Seattle of way-back-when - parents of the present would probably ban JP viewing from their kids because it's not an IQ-boosting activity. (Personally, I'd love for my kid to watch JP if his show were still around.)

Comment by Another old Patches Pal

Well said Patches Pal #10267, however, I don't think your Mom or JP would approve of your language. (Grin) I agree... the young people now days (not all, but some)can be so very cold and unfeeling. JP and Gertrude taught us respect, love and to do what is right. They were wonderful, funny role models. Now these gentlemen who entertained hundreds of thousands of kids are very ill and for us and the Northwest to pay their respect and appreciation is a wonderful thing. This statue is a giant bank where people can contribute to the Seattle Children's Hospital. That's what these men were all about. They really cared for kids and still do... They even cared for me back in the 50s when my home was torn apart by alcoholism. I was the second person to give them a hug when they got out of their colorful limo at Fremont last Sunday and I drove 40 miles to see them. I was a little kid all over again. God bless them and all of you Patches Pals out there.
