must be nice to tear into all these service organizations for trying to prevent hiv...while "the stranger" sits back and collects revenue from ads they sold to the biggest gay sex club in town...z club. selling ads like this then bashing prevention efforts seems so unfair.

@1, Tough titty.

The Stranger has rightly taken to task the various unimaginative -- and downright stupid (murder mystery night at the bathhouse, anyone?) -- HIV prevention efforts and thank god. Are they supposed to applaud every effort, simply because its heart is in the right place?

I'm sure it's difficult for the non-profits on the receiving end of such commentary, but if it drives them to improve their approach and get real (versus more deeply embedded in the feel-good circle jerk of ineffectual HIV prevention modalities), then The Stranger will have provided an invaluable service.

And if they need to take money from people who are already well down the path to self-destruction to save thousands of future gays, then more power to them.

I'm just pointing out the hypocrisy...In gerneal, i am glad the stranger puts a critical eye to prevention methods...it does seem really harsh and one sided at times...but for the most part i applaud the stranger...and i wish there were better prevention strategies...it's just tricky because unlike with cigarettes if you demonize the act, you will be denounced as a homophobe...so you are damned if you do and damned if you don't.

@3, I hear you on the "labeled a homophobe" bit, and its corollary of being labeled as "sex negative."

But The Stranger of all media outlets has called bullshit on this, and has demanded that the gay community (and it's non-profit support entities) cease and desist with the "you're sex negative/homophobic" crap in the face of criticism of their programs.

The Stranger is your friend, uhmmm!

According to the two contenders for KC Exec ... I wouldn't worry about them having much of a budget anyway, so don't expect to see any expansions of existing programs unless some major donor pops up (hah).
