In my adopted hometown of Hamburg, Germany, one finds a -very- dog-friendly environment. Dogs are routinely seen (and always well-mannered) in all sorts of public places, bars, restaurants, public transit.

It being Germany, there are specific rules for lots of things, a VERY long list is posted in every bus and subway car.

Dogs are specifically allowed, EXCEPT
Pit-Bull, American Staffordshire Terrier, Staffordshire Bullterrier.

Oh yeah, those killer-dog apologists will now equate anti-Pit Bullism with Naziism.

What is it with hyper-masculine straight guys and vicious dogs? Does the animal represent some kind of horrible extension of their manhood/penis? They should be bred out of existence.(The dogs, not the men. On second thought....)

I do agree some what with the "no bad dogs, only bad owners" argument. However, I have never heard of a golden retriever savaging a neighbor. Maybe it happens and doesn't get reported. Maybe there is a bias to report pit bull attacks. I doubt it is a total black out though. These dogs were originally bred for the purposes of fighting. It is to some degree "in their nature", such that shitty owners will bring it out. If you ban the breed it will help. It's not like people can't get other nice dogs. Of course the best course of action would be serious penalties for owners who don't look after their dogs.

Ugh--you guys are perpetuating the cycle. My neighbor adopted an insanely sweet/social/well-behaved pitbull 3 years ago but now is too scared to take her to the dog park because he feels like you "just cant trust these dogs (i.e. Dan's posting)." Now she is trapped in the backyard bored out of her mind and slowly going INSANE.

Has it been confirmed that this was a Pitbull attack and not just media sensationalism. Everyone knows that Pitbulls are the the most adorable loving pets that one could have. And they're great with children. They just get blamed for everything. Had to be one of those bad dog owners at fault here. Have you hugged your Pitbull today.
