Gov. Gregoire Orders Hiring Freeze

posted by on August 4 at 12:23 PM

That state job you just interviewed for? Not happening.

Gov. Chris Gregoire is telling state agencies to cut hiring, travel and fuel costs as the weak economy continues to take its toll.

In a memo released Monday, Gregoire tells agency directors to cut gas consumption by five percent. She also orders freezes on hiring, out-of-state travel, service contracts and extra equipment. There’s some exceptions for emergencies.

The freeze comes as Gregoire works on a new two-year state budget. The Democrat has been asking agencies to propose service cuts to balance the budget. She says tax increases are a last resort.

Gregoire won’t say how big of a deficit the state is facing. But legislative budget experts say the gap could be about $2.7 billion.

what's with the plastic bottled water?

Are you re-filling it from the tap?

It's good to see that she is taking this budget problem seriously. Now if only the Goddamned feds would wise up and start dealing with the same problems.

nice she is taking it seriously: too late for her to win relection but it's nice she is thinking about it.

We offered water, but the Gov. preferred her own bottled water, which an assistant had to fetch from her vehicle outside.

I wouldn't trust your water either. You'd probably put "vitamins" in it.

Gary Locke left the state with a surplus. What happened? Mismanagment and arroagance. We have no choice but to NOT re-elect "3-times-a-charm" Christine.

Washington is doing way, way better than most other states thanks to the gov/legislature's (relative) budget restraint. Compared to the spending sprees other states went on during the late housing boom, we're doing (again, relatively) well and face a much lower shortfall than other states are seeing.

I mean, it's going to hurt here over the next few years, yes, but other states are getting shit-out-of-luck type hurtings. Californians may well begin to panic down there, with all the shit hitting their fan right now.

Gregoire knew that a recession was coming, and planned for it by drafting a budget that had more of a rainy day fund than was legally required. People in the Legislature were whining about it, but it looks like she was right to be so prudent.

smart - smart - smart

families are cutting back, the state cuts back, what happened to the city? it will get worse

and she will be re-elected, Dino is so stupid and Gregoire is status quo, people stick with incumbents in hard times, ie. war, depression, and she is governing/leading by cutting back now

going to send her another 100.00 for the campaign

@4: Because she was worried that the water you were giving her was poisoned. Word around Olympia is that she's increasingly very paranoid.

Word around the US is that John Older-than-Reagan-at-end-of-term McCain is increasingly very paranoid and prone to fits of incoherent rage over the littlest thing.

You were saying, comrade?

I've never understood the travel perks of our electeds. If I submitted an invoice for all the "fact finding missions" I could dream up to loosely pertain to my job, I'd be fired.

How retarded would you have to be to even consider Dino Rossi? That's plenty retarded.
