Gone Fishing

Remember Strangercrombie? That winter charity auction of ours that, last year, raised over $50,000 for FareStart?

Back in December, a Strangercrombie high-bidder named Sam paid at $523.26 for the privilege of going salmon fishing with our publisher, Tim Keck.

Last Saturday, Sam and Tim and boat captain (and friend of the paper) Josh Gurnee puttered into Elliot Bay at 4:45 am to catch some king salmon. A report from Tim:

Sam caught his limit that morning with two beautiful fish, the biggest around 20 pounds. Most boats on the water got zilch that morning. Way to go Sam and special thanks to Josh for donating his time and boat and being the best captain on the water.

Stay tuned for next year’s Strangercrombie. We’ll be picking the charity—with you help—next month. Last year, people were stumping for Treehouse, 826 Seattle, and Urban Rest Stop along with FareStart.

Which good causes do people like this year?

How about a fund for all the whiners who keep promising to move away from Seattle because it's not as good/friendly/cheap/sunny/trendy as whatever hell-hole they moved here to get away from in the first place.

I went to FareStart for lunch the other day. My veggie sandwich was delectable, and it seems like they're doing great work.

What Comte said. I need mooooniez to leave, but I can't seem to stop spending my mooooniez on alcohol and drugs to get legitimately black-out thrashed night after night in order to cope with the shittiness that is Seattle. I'll be in a bar in approximately 1 hour. See ya there!

Well, with a name like "Country Coctor" I'd think $$ would be the least of their concerns...

I agree: Critical Mass (lead the way), Hempfest (speak on stage and go to the Green Room), and FareStart are all good choices.

Plus, maybe "Be a superhero for the night at Savage Love".

Mmm, Catwoman. Meow.

Clearly they weren't fishing Elliott Bay because it's been shit this year and ain't nobody catching limits. Sad fisherpeople :(

Country Doctor, Seattle Urban League, Arts Corps, YouthCare, Innocence Project, Treehouse...all great causes.

The Country Doctor is incredibly deserving, and in not-very-good financial health. They have kept my un-insurable body alive for the last zillion years, so they get my wholehearted support.

826 is awesome, but isn't life or death.

Pick the Country Doctor Clinic!!

Congrats to Sam for two very well played fish, thanks to Tim for piloting the boat through a crowded Elliott Bay to the hook-ups, and congrats to the Stranger community for helping raise such a generous donation to a great cause.

Mr. Poe @ 2: It's amazing how the threat of a confiscated boat keeps limits in check!

jseattle @ 27: Yes, those two Kings did indeed come from EB. Confidential to the sad fisherpeople: Green splatter glow hootchie 36" behind a green/glow hotspot with 85' on the wire trolled faster than about 80% of the fleet produced the bigger Chinook... Fish number two came off a cop car Coho Killer virtually on the surface with only a 4oz banana weight - A bonus fish off the third rod!

My vote for next year: Puget Sound Restoration Fund.

given public health seattle/king county's cuts, why not help with some of the programs that are going to be underfunded like perinatal outreach programs.
