Charles (and the AP writer) erroneously assume "occupy the same airspace" is a euphemism for "collide".
"Occupy the same airspace" could mean flying within 1000 feet apart vertically and several nautical miles apart horizontally (specifics depending on context not given).
@2 refers to the quote at the beginning:

Which I felt was good advice in general. I didn't read the rest of the post.
