I just looked out my windows and scored of Republicans are crying, yea, weeping! Yes, it's a New Day (or whatever bs you libs say) or Change or ....well, hell, she's HOT.

I mean, I would read the news everyday for 4 years if Sarah Palin was on it.

Sarah Palin has been a governor for only 18 months. And before that, she was a mayor of a town of only 8000.

A big WTF? for the McCain campaign.

she has an 18 year old son in the army, his name is Track. he's kinda hot, serious gay face. she has a new-born with downs' syndrome, his name is Trig.

I had a feeling that he would pick a woman, in order to court Hillary-Democrat defectors and to position himself has "the real agent of change."

I've said in the past that Sarah Palin would be a smart pick for future Republican nominee for President. She could definitely attract some Democrats to her side.

Plus, she's got that sexy librarian thing going on.

I just wonder how her her staunch pro-life stance and her semi-acceptance of gays will play out in Bible country. I think John just lost the evangelicals with this pick.

@4, why would a staunch pro-life view hurt her with evangelicals?

I love that McCain would pick someone in the middle of an ethics scandal to be his running mate, someone with almost zero experience, someone from one of the most corrupt Republican machines in recent memory. Brilliant.

Will her kid with Down's syndrome be an issue?

I've got a special needs daughter (congenital CMV exposure) who is profoundly deaf in one ear, 80% deaf in the other, and at high risk for future mental retardation and blindness if the infection were ever to spread.

It takes a ton out of both my wife and I to be there for our daughter, but we do it because she's ours.

To be vice-president Palin would have to sublet most of the parenting to her husband and hired help. Her husband is a championship snowmobiler who also works in oil; how much is he willing to give up?

No doubt the rallying cry to defend Palin will be "How can you criticize her? She went ahead and had a Downs child! Isn't she heroic!" Implicit of course is that the 9 out of 10 couples who had Downs pregnancies and who chose to abort were not heroic. This is a pro-life candidate to shore up the religious right base:"I am pro-life and I believe that marriage should only be between and man and a woman. I am opposed to any expansion of gambling in Alaska.

An absurd grab at straws by a dying party. This just shows how far past they are at believing they can actually win.

Yes, I can see it now. Criticize McCain and he whines that he is a POW. Criticize Palin and she whines that her kid has Downs. That will totally work for maybe a week.

This is great news. I was hoping for Mitt, but this maybe better. Obama must be laughing his ass off. It has definitely made my day.

so john @1, you would read the news everyday if palin were in it, but not if she isn't? are you embarrassed to admit to such shallow stupidity? oh, that's right, you're a proud mcsame-supporting repugnican--of course--you're PROUD of your shallow stupidity. happily for me and mine, you folks are losing this year and won't be taking me down with you. *sighs with relief*

Mavrick number One joins Mavrick number Two

All are projecting it will be a close election - this might be remembered as brillant.

She's got a vagina so all women will vote for her, right?

when i first read this, i thought it said Sarah Polley...she'd have been a better choice, but of course, she's Canadian.

The GOP has stooped to a new low by saying "Hey, we know McCain is going to never make it through one term but if you vote for us, you get a female president".

Again the lesser of two corporatist candidates is the Democrat.

Sarah Palin = Dan Quayle? We'll see...

Well, it certainly takes the sails out of McSame's "Obama doesn't have enough experience to be President" canard, which is good.

Obviously, Palin's pro-life, pro-gun stance will play well with the GOP base, as will her husband's employment in the oil industry. And I suppose there's even a possibility some of Hillary's more rabid supporters will ignore her anti-abortion stance, just because she IS a woman.

But, seriously, Biden is going to eat her alive in the debates, although I would hope he'll have enough sense to NOT roll over her like a steamroller, since that would probably just appear as bullying (causing the GOP to no doubt lay down the same gender-card they've played against Hillary earlier).

I think the way this is going to play out on the Dem side is to hit her on issues that don't play well with the GOP, for example, her admitted use of marijuana, her stance on global climate change, her soft stance on gay rights issues (she's apparently anti-gay marriage, but not generally in favor of discrimination against gays), and other issues where her political positions appear to be more in line with the Democrats than with the Republicans.

I can see the GOP trying to frame her as a "maverick" ala McSame, but in reality, she appears to be much more so than he is, and while that might attract more independents, it's sure to be a turn-off to many in the GOP core constituency.

What's her stance on the death penalty? I know it is banned in Alaska.

Interestingly, Alaska is also a state where abortion was LEGAL pre-Roe.

I wonder whether the fact that she has five kids, one an infant with Down's, might paint her both as a reassuring alternative to the overinvolved VP a la Cheney and also take the distaste out of a female VP for the right-wingers. I mean, she's sort of just the assistant president. She has other responsibilities that she'll mostly be taking care of, right?

Posted by leek | August 29, 2008 9:41 AM

I can already tell that she is evil. Have you seen that big-ass hair?

However, I think it's super duper lame that anyone would question her ability to lead just because she has a special needs child. If she were a man it wouldn't even be an issue.

not exactly my type, but yes, she is attractive for a republican.

the 5 kids makes her seem like mrs. duggar jr., though. this is the 21st century, not the 19th.

and the downs infant? that's just luggage - the staff will take care of him.

#14 The pro-Hillary people here at the Nursing Center are already saying they are voting for McCain because he put a woman on the ticket. I tried telling them that the Republicans will gut Medicare and Medicaid and many of them will be out of a job, but there is no talking to some people.

As far as her ethics scandal, why don't you read it before comment. It's not just much ado about nothing, it makes her look good.

Abusing power to benifit your family? That's not going to trouble the idiots who have elected Bush one and a half times. They choose their king based on who they'd want to hang out with, and they have terrible taste.

the experience issue is even more up for grabs now. the repubs just say that the inexperienced role should be the VP, and the experience the P. it's pretty straight-forward. if dems attack her inexperience, they bring obama's to mind. if the repubs attack obama's inexperience, they can just say a VP is the place to gain experience.

@19 The story I read on yahoo called her a maverick just like McCain in the first paragraph.

Corporate media has its marching orders.

If McCain had cast anybody else in the part, it would have been business as usual. This way, it's just pathetic. As always, some morons will fall for it, but are bigot class men and women who won't vote for a black man really going to vote for a white woman -- and one who, in their opinion, should really be home with her kids?

There aren't enough bitter broomstickers in the country to offset McCain's loss of his own voting base.

The possibility that McCain's people didn't fully vet her, or that there might be scandals afoot, is zero. Remember, they're EVIL, not STUPID.

@30 But she IS embroiled in a well-documented scandal RIGHT NOW. Remember, Republicans are EVIL, so where are they going to find one who ISN'T in a scandal now or soon to be in one? This is exactly what they have to choose from.

You want scandal-free, you got to vote Obama/Biden.

Alaska is the size of the City of Seattle. Just one-third the size of King County. And she has been Governor of this people-free expanse for only two human gestation periods. And before that the mayor of a "city" just about two-thirds the size of Enumclaw. And now you're going to but her one hot-headed geezer's heartbeat away from the nuclear trigger? Really?

She's WHITE.

Unfortunately, there are a huge number of southerners who will never accept a BLACK president. No matter how Stupid and/or Evil the white candidates are.

I let myself forget this in the glory of last night. Unfortunately, morning arrived...

I'm very much looking forward to the VP debate. I predict that Biden will chew her into little pieces, rather than swallow her whole.

@23,

Yes, but she's a Republican. Most Republicans have enough trouble accepting a woman who works, but a woman who sacrifices her kid with Down's for her career? Egad.

@23 YOu're right, if she were a man it wouldn't be an issue because eveyone would just assume her wife was taking care of the children.

As it is, I still don't think it's an issue. I just assume her live in nanny takes care of the child.

JUST SAY NOBAMA !!!
Oh stop whining Democrats ... for the past year, you've been trying every trick in the book to shove an inexperienced, empty suit, Barack Hussein Obama, down the throats of Americans. Sure, maybe you sweetened the bad taste by adding pretty speeches, big swooning crowds, and fireworks ... but, you still tried to shove him down our throats, at every opportunity. Democrats, it was a lot easier to highjack the primary election than it's going to be with the general election. Looks like America is going to elect McCain/Palin for President and V.P.. And, that means: No Wright, no Farrakahn, no Ayers, no Rezko, no mean Michelle, and, NOBAMA !!!
