WHAT???? Not Isaac! I've got WattsStax sitting at home waiting to be watched. Now it's going to be sad. What a great figure in soul music. Those early Stax songs he wrote for Sam & Dave made up one of THE great American songwriting catalogs. And his solo performances made him one of the top soul artists of the seventies, just a half-step behind Al Green and Curtis Mayfield.

This is a great loss. Shattering.

Give his album "Black Moses" a listen. His arrangement of "Close To You" is a masterpiece. Also, "Soulsville" on the "Shaft" soundtrack.

I'll consider this the occasion to finally score a copy of Hot Buttered Soul, so I can finally hear the cut "Hyperbolicsyllabicseequedalymystic," so famously sampled in this song.

And Fnarf, watching Rufus Thomas do the Funky Chicken oughta take a little sting away, doncha think?

Seattle Public Library has a copy of "Respect Yourself: The Stax Records Story" which has a lot of Issac Hayes in it, both archival footage and new commentary. There's some hilarious footage of his ultra-custom Cadillac too, and some from the auction where they unloaded everything after bankruptcy, including Isaac's watch, with about a pound of diamonds on it.

There is also a clip of Sam and Dave dancing that will blow the back of your head off when they start pogoing. You will also come to realize that Al Jackson, Jr., Stax and later Al Green's drummer, was maybe the greatest musician to come out of America in the past 75 years. There was magic on McLemore Avenue, and Mr. Hayes was an integral part of it.

This is truly a shame. Thankfully his wonderful music will outlive us all.

He's got a new movie with Samuel L. Jackson and... Bernie Mac. Samuel might want to go see his doctor just in case.

Scientology aside, Isaac was the epitome of cool.

Lovers of apathy and irony, hipsters are connected through a global network of blogs and shops that push forth a global vision of fashion-informed aesthetics. Loosely associated with some form of creative output, they attend art parties, take lo-fi pictures with analog cameras, ride their bikes to night clubs and sweat it up at nouveau disco-coke parties. The hipster tends to religiously blog about their daily exploits, usually while leafing through generation-defining magazines like Vice, Another Magazine and Wallpaper. This cursory and stylized lifestyle has made the hipster almost universally loathed.

Less a subculture, the hipster is a consumer group – using their capital to purchase empty authenticity and rebellion. But the moment a trend, band, sound, style or feeling gains too much exposure, it is suddenly looked upon with disdain. Hipsters cannot afford to maintain any cultural loyalties or affiliations for fear they will lose relevance.

An amalgamation of its own history, the youth of the West are left with consuming cool rather that creating it.

Re arrangement skills : have a listen to "Part Time Love" from Black Moses. During the (long) outro section, the way Willie Hall keeps stretching his fills WAY past the top (and into the SECOND) bar of the main riff is one of the hippest moves ever recorded.

Whether it was Ike's idea or Willie's is a moot point - it's on Isaac's record.

Have you seen the Ken Burns youtube mockumentary, The Old Negro Space Program? Just discovered it a few days ago. It's by a writer from Malcolm in the Middle. Hilarious! After I saw this post I thought of one of the characters, "Loopy Louie" Hayes. I bring this up because you mentioned Isaac's "ultra-custom Cadillac," which really draws the comparison when you see the Caddy in space near the end. Cheers.

My favorite memory of him was at the Oscars when he was playing keyboards and this smoke machine malfunctioned and blew tons of smoke in his face -- he kept playing and singing. Fucking professional genius to the end.

Fnarf, thanks for sharing that info about Hayes. Unfortunately, I'm far less cultured than you and know very little about Hayes true music (but I could sing you a mean rendition of "Shaft." Damn right.).

What I know of Hayes is that he was a hilarious character on one of those most sardonic and culturally intelligent television shows in the last decade. And then he screwed it up by getting caught up in a ridiculous cult/carnival. Next thing you know, he's dead.

Anybody ever see "Truck Turner"? Wild blaxploitation film. Ever see the video of the show he did in Zaire in the 70s? Awesome outfit. His pre-"Shaft" music is especially important. Apparently, he had 11 kids. We're all Chef's children now. Issac Hayes shall be missed.
