I've got WattsStax sitting at home waiting to be watched. Now it's going to be sad. What a great figure in soul music. Those early Stax songs he wrote for Sam & Dave made up one of THE great American songwriting catalogs. And his solo performances made him one of the top soul artists of the seventies, just a half-step behind Al Green and Curtis Mayfield.

This is a great loss. Shattering.

There's some hilarious footage of his ultra-custom Cadillac too, and some from the auction where they unloaded everything after bankruptcy, including Isaac's watch, with about a pound of diamonds on it.

There is also a clip of Sam and Dave dancing that will blow the back of your head off when they start pogoing. You will also come to realize that Al Jackson, Jr., Stax and later Al Green's drummer, was maybe the greatest musician to come out of America in the past 75 years. There was magic on McLemore Avenue, and Mr. Hayes was an integral part of it.

Have you seen the Ken Burns youtube mockumentary, The Old Negro Space Program? Just discovered it a few days ago. It's by a writer from Malcolm in the Middle. Hilarious!
