Thank the FSM that the downtrodden credit card companies will finally have a voice in our government.

How does having been born in Scranton automatically translate into national appeal?

Scranton is weird, in a Ukrainian way.

Dear Slog,

I want to congratulate Joe Biden on becoming the vice presidential running nominee. Joe is a friend and colleague, a strong experienced leader and a devoted public servant. I look forward to not only seeing him in Denver next week but on the trail as I work to help Barack Obama and Joe Biden along with many other Democratic candidates campaign this fall.

I am looking forward to doing everything I can to champion Barack Obama. I can't thank everyone enough for your generous support over the past few weeks. It means so much to me personally to know that I can count on your continued friendship as I work hard to help elect Barack Obama and our other Democratic candidates in 2008.

Thank you again for your hard work and your generous spirit.

Sincerely,

To hear everyone go on about Biden it's clear that Obama doesn't have the chops to be prez... Biden got walked all over in the primaries but now everyone seems to be wanting to elect HIM as prez. The buck is suppose to stop with Obama -- but it looks like he'll need to run everything by his elder statesman first.

You guys crack me up... you go on about CHANGE but then Obama starts CHANGING his positions and picks a guy who has been in the system for almost 40 years... but y'all can look past those minor details I guess. Just like you went on about McCain's age - but suddenly age is an asset?

I have been a huge Biden fan for at least 20 years so I am happy he is the guy. I will be biting my nails the whole time Bill and Hillary give their speeches at the convention. If for one second they look like they are not behind this team 100% they can kiss any legacy and any chance that Hillary will ever be President goodbye.

Nobody at teh Slog had nary a Biden-tastic Blue's Clue by yesterday eventide? CNN announced it was Biden around 8-ish PM PST last night & put it right onto their 'breaking news' crawl, perhaps forevermore. FoxNews soon followed. Both networks at that time claimed 'sources within the DNC' had confirmed Obama's VP was Biden. MSNBC, the self-proclaimed "place for politics" was of course still airing that Olympics stuff...

Say what you will, I am impressed that Christopher, Megan, Eli, Annie and Dan posted anything after 5pm Friday. I think they usually start hitting the Happy Hours around 4pm on Friday. The fact that there are any posts rather than the usual Morning news and Stranger Suggests on a Saturday are a welcome change (I was about to beg Dan for a non-paying job Slogging on the Weekends, but now it seems unnecessary).

Oh joy. The Democrats are serving up their most fervent Senatorial drug warrior for VP -- the guy who came up with the idea of "Drug Czar", sponsored the anti-ecstasy hysteria, and is now running around about steroids. The Libertarian Party is promoting a maybe-reformed uber drug warrior. And the Republicans are, well, as all of them (except Ron Paul) are on any thought that adults should be left alone.

Definitely a good election to sit out.

Then sit out Fritz, see what a McCain election does for you. Better yet - vote for Nader, that's worked so well for all the uber-liberals the last 8 years, hasn't it? Fucking brilliant, short-sighted liberals are what are wrong with this country - and I'm a fucking liberal.

And with those who have doubts about Biden, keep watching. He's the ideal pick for the campaign that is playing out right now.

@ 12,

Um... no. The fact that most of our fellow citizens are aggressively ignorant, hateful, right-wing, sub-moronic members of an apocalyptic doomsday cult who will scream about how much they hate furriners, unions and socialized medicine when they're one paycheck away from homelessness and death in a gutter is what's wrong with this country.

Actually, both 12 & 13 are correct. As for all of those who are threatening to vote for someone other than Obama or sit out, fine. Why don't you do us a favor and remove yourselves from society. Typical Northwesterners...whiners.

NE PA Native @2: How does having been born in Scranton automatically translate into national appeal?

NE PA Native, between Hillary's roots and Biden's roots and "The Office," it should be obvious by now that Scranton is America.

NE PA Native: Scranton is weird, in a Ukrainian way.

Speaking as someone whose family is from Ukraine and who grew up not far from Scranton, I don't dispute this.

We're going to see the clip of Biden explaining how Obama isn't experienced enough about a million times between now and the election. How will he explain that away, he wasn't experienced enough a few months ago but he's OK now?

I'm a Pittsburgh transplant living outside Philly and working in Wilmington. Believe me they (and I) love Biden over here. He is a solid dude. Oh and Michelle Obama is drop dead gorgeous too, imo. My favorite part of the day was when they were hugging each other. That's the America I want to live in, beautiful.

Oh, and great post, Mr. Christopher Frizzelle. I'm not easily amused, but man, I think you just did for Scranton what Monty Python did for Spam.

Another great thing about Biden? He has been commuting on Amtrak for years and is a huge supporter of public transit! This is up at Dkos:

A Shot in the Arm for Amtrak?

by MissLaura

Sat Aug 23, 2008 at 03:03:52 PM PDT

KStreetProjector and Atrios have both pointed to one of the things liberals should really be cheering about Joe Biden being on the Democratic ticket: The man is one of Amtrak's biggest supporters.

That support comes in several forms:

Biden commutes to work each day on Amtrak and has been a strong supporter of the beleaguered rail service. He is an original co-sponsor of the Amtrak Reauthorization Bill (National Defense Rail Act), S.104, introduced on January 7, 2003. Introducing an earlier version of the bill with Sen. Fritz Hollings (D-SC) on March 6, 2002, Biden stated, "For 30 years, I have witnessed Congress dangling a carrot in front of Amtrak's eyes, funding it just enough for it to limp along. And I'll tell you, this has to stop. Now is the time to commit politically and financially to a strong, safe, and efficient passenger rail system." ......

Amtrak president George Warrington presented Biden with [a bunch of awards for supporting]

......Moreover, his younger son is on the Amtrak board, ........

Etc.

I was born, grew up and went to college in Philadelphia, and am well-familiar with Scranton and Wilmington. They are both ass-pits, and somebody as sharp on his feet as Biden will get massive support in the lunch-bucket Mid-Atlantic and Rust Belt.

Why anybody with two brain cells to rub together would vote for McCain escapes me.

@13 above scares the shit out of me.

Because he's correct.

Cressona,

Scranton is an idealized shithole, the economy has been depressed since before I was born (1974). All of NE PA is struggling but damn, they sure do give up the young ones to our military.

I love it there. Damn happy we left when I was 3.

I seen you today Hipster. You had a cigarette in one hand and a Stranger in the other. You smelled like stinking cigarette smoke as you puffed away feeding your loser addiction. Your ear lobes were sagging with ear plugs that went out of style five years ago. And those tats? The colors have faded and they are starting to merge into an ugly blob. Didn't you ever notice what tats look like on older men? You thought those fuckers would forever be in style? Would you like to wear the same fucking shirt every day for the rest of your life? And that tat on your neck-it shouts LOSER to everyone who sees it. But being a loser is your thing right? That's why you read the Slog.

Where is the snarky ECB in all of this? She desperately wanted Clinton in office, and to see Obama pick another old white guy to fill Hillary's perceived spot on the ticket she must be fuming.
