Another God

New Orleans residents observed the third anniversary of Hurricane Katrina’s devastation on Friday with solemn ceremonies and community events. And then they went to board up their homes and businesses and possibly prepare to evacuate as they await the onslaught of Hurricane Gustav.

Tropical Storm Gustav officially became a hurricane again Friday as it set its sights on the Cayman Islands. Oil traders eyed the storm’s projected path toward the Gulf of Mexico. Residents all along the Gulf Coast, from Pensacola, Fla. to Brownsville, Texas, are watching the skies, the surf and the oncoming storm. Hurricane Gustav’s current path is aimed almost directly at Louisiana. Forecasters anticipate the storm could make landfall sometime late Monday or early Tuesday.

And when is the RNC? September 1-4, 2008. And who recently was praying to God for a storm that would ruin the DNC’s closing event? And what happened? Nothing. Sunshine all over Denver. And relative peace over the rest of America. If there is a God, we now know who He wants to sit next Him on the mighty throne of world power.

Who names hurricanes? They really missed the boat on this one. "Hurricane George" would've been perfect.

As a former resident of Florida, I know all about hurricane season. Allow me to educate:

The National Weather Service has something like eight rotating lists of names, and every time a storm gets to the status of Tropical Storm (which is a notch above Tropical Depression and a notch below Hurricane), they name the storm. The lists are rotated every year.

They keep using the names until a hurricane is a bad one, which usually involves killing a lot of people. They then cross this name off the list and will never be used again.

In recent memory...

Hurricane Andrew all but leveled Homestead, Florida in 1992.

Hurricanes Charlie and Frances seriously fucked up Daytona Beach, Florida (as well as other parts of Florida as well) in 2005. (have YOU ever been to Florida, in August, and not had any air conditioning and unable to drive anywhere? TRUST ME when I say you don't want to. We had trees through our house that were definitely not there when we moved in.)

Hurricane Katrina might have done something to New Orleans in 2005. I donno. Maybe someone else will remember.

In short: There has already been a Hurricane Georges.

Hurricane Season. Fucking shit, I'm glad I left Florida for Chicago. I still vote there, though, which means my vote actually matters.
