Any popular viewpoint has much richer photographic opportunities among the photographers than the viewpoint itself. Nobody needs or wants another pic of Mount Rushmore, but the attitudes and poses of the fat people photographing it are inexhaustible.

Rushmore is pretty much a waste. The Badlands, however, are totally magnificent and worth the price.

@3 beat me to it – a smart and concise way to explain that idea. National monuments are probably the best places to photograph "America."

It would be interesting to see a series of photos taken at national monuments disassociated from the monuments themselves, and see if/how the character of the people changes.

The thing about Rushmore that blows my mind is the Nuremberg Rally-esque viewing structure they built in front of it. It's very close to parody.

I've been to Mr. Rushmore, and I found it very exciting, interesting and beautiful. Even though you know what it looks like from photographs, it's not the same as being there.
