2008 Election Cheat Sheet!

posted by on August 8 at 13:08 PM

Too lazy to slog through 4,400 words of endorsements? We hear you. To simplify your decision-making in the August 19 primary election, we’ve put together a handy, printer-ready cheat sheet that tells you which candidates we support.

The Stranger Election Control Board cheat sheet: Easier than thinking for yourself!

I was kind of disappointed in the SECB output this year. It seemed like too much "vote for this person because we say so / because they're cool" and not enough real reasons and discussion. Maybe it's because you had more to cover, maybe it's "just a primary", maybe it's the new editorial direction, but in the past you had a better balance of issues and snark.

PS, vote for the muslim for Gov.

Do you rascals promise that there are no god damn errors this time?!

For the first time in probably 5-6 years I won't feel the need to bring something like this (or frantically load it on my phone's browser while in the booth [yes, i still vote in a booth, fuck off]) because, having joined my district's Dems and attended the past few meetings, I've gotten a chance to personally see and hear most of the local candidates.

PS: Graham for Sup. Ct. Pos. 22!

PPS: Gregory for FW (30th) Rep!

Your endorsements link appears to be broken.

@1 Agreed.

You damn kids are a greater disappointment every year. Why do we pay $1500 a month for pills that keep us alive, just to watch you fuck your shit up. We're inclined to off ourselves on November 4th, lest we die with the knowledge that your fuck ups elected the wrong guy... or that there are grandchildren on the way.

You may think you're joking about the 'thinking for yourself' bit, but I wouldn't vote in most local elections if not for the cheat sheet. Sad. True.

Be nice when you take your ballot to the Fremont Baptist Church for the second-to-last election in which you can cast ballots in person.

The poll worker there may be my son.

His major complaint: he can't wear his Obama shirt to work on August 19th.

I usually enjoy the yearly endorsements even if they're all about kissing the Democratic Party's ass because they usually are witty and an amusing read. I too was disappointed with the low level of snark in this sheet, so I'm hoping to see better come the general election.

I do give the SECB credit for endorsing Sam Reed, though. It proves that you guys are independent enough to cross your partisan bent when presented with such a no-brainer.

Oh, fucking eww.

You kids cannot be serious. This is sick if people actually allow this to influence their vote on who will be running the little world they live in for the next four years.
This is too satirical for anyone to take seriously (I hope).

I hope some of your readers are Independent voters and actually look at all of the candidates and their messages!

+1 for Sam Reed. If you own a business, like I do, you probably have used all the neat online stuff the state provides for you (like the ability to file your incorporation papers online). Not many other states in our fine nation are as net friendly as ours and it is in large part because of his work.

I'm not sure I'm in agreement with you on the Governor or Mc. Dermont however. I have a hard time seeing what she's done for this state and same with him.

While I have a hard time swallowing the Rossi pill, I do believe his personal values are of very little importance this election cycle (much the same on the federal level). So what if he is anti-abortion?... good luck legislating that in our state! And again, while I have a hard time swoalling the Rossi pill, I also think our state needs more political diversity... amusingly, while our nation is far to puritanical right-wing and needs a huge swing left, I think our state and city could use a little bump to the right.

Right now while our Viaduct/520 is gonna kill a bunch of people in the next earthquake and we still lack good public transit, we are busy burning political capital with 20 cent bag taxes and how far we should stand away from strippers. Gimme a break! We need fresh faces both locally and state wide.

And by the way, I suggest you read the statements in the voters guide. Notice how much more informative the non-partisan positions read vs the partisan ones? Yeah. Vote yes on 26... why should party affiliation matter for things like state auditor?

I agree the SECB was disappointing this year. Not only was it tedious to read and lacked wit and usual charm (while still being informative) of years past, but it didn't seem to take the enterprise of justying the conclusions as seriously in the past.

People rely on these endorsements, I myself often often vote 90% following the SECB's recommendations, and a 4,400 word, tedious article is an all-around let-down.

In addition, the Cheat Sheet indication for Lieutenant Governor is going to backfire: dim-witted folks using the cheat sheet will vote multiply, as the Cheat Sheet implies, which will invalidate those ballots and result in Brad Owen winning anyway. The layout/design for that item needs to be redone ASAP.

Great stuff - I agree about Reed - his opponent is running around talking about barcodes and such - but we all know that is BS. In the end - his office went out of their way to make sure the domestic partnership program works - and that says a lot - no other GOPr would even come close. Also - one of the first states to allow fo on-line voter and candidate registration and there is a lot of other cool computer stuff - like no others.
