Whither Slog Happy?

posted by on July 29 at 11:04 AM

Dear Slog,

Since Amy Kate is leaving the paper for the fancy, high-stakes world of cattle auctioneering, this means that Megan Seling and I are splitting the duties of overseeing Slog Happy. However, Megan Seling doesn’t drink and I can drink nail polish remover on a street corner and be perfectly happy, so we’d like your opinions in the comments about where the next Slog Happy should be held.

Also, I’d be interested to hear from anyone who hasn’t attended Slog Happy about what it would take for them to actually attend Slog Happy. And if you have attended Slog Happy, what would you like more of? Food? Trivia? A mud-wrestling match between a Critical Mass bike rider and a 20-cent plastic bag?

I appreciate your comments in advance.

(heart,)
Paul Bobby

I'd love to see it in Capitol Hill again, personally. It's nice getting out and about, but I'm selfish and being able to walk home afterward is awesome.

All-expenses paid trip from Toronto is what'd bring me to Slog Happy.

Chicago Fan is attending, and I'm sure he'd appreciate Slog Happy going down at the Comet, his usual haunt when he's in town.

airfare from SFO would be nice.

As long as I know there will be trivia, and I'm not working, I will be there. I'm not a big mingler, so trivia is my draw. Though mud wrestling also sounds quite attractive...

Someplace quieter, with sit-down food and name cards would be nice. Take reservations, and deposits to ensure attendance. North of the Ship Canal.

And I know Catalina is still holding out for the champagne fountain.

Let's get some gaming going, at least for one iteration of it. Change the name to "Slog Zappy." Find a place with TVs that will let us hook up a Wii or Xbox. (Preferably a few TVs.) I do not know where would be best for this, but I too am open to suggestion, and I can bring my game systems and games as needed.

Having it at 7 instead of 6 would be nice... I know you're supposed to punish those of us burning fossil fuels with a commute, but could you take pity on us just this once?

Also might I suggest trying it on a night other than Thursday? Thursdays don't conflict with my schedule now, but they do for 2/3 of the year. I can't possibly be the only one.

no gaming, sam. it doesn't encourage mixing and socializing. and not the comet! too noisy. we wanna hear each other talk. havana was nice, and so was moe's VIP room, until the stupid ass fire department closed it. good food and trivia are always welcome, natch. along with mr. poe, elenchos, comte, hernandez, w7ngman, aislinn, abby, enigma, poptart, mr. poe's jew, greg, rhett oracle, tsm (you hawt thang you!), infrequent, rain man, nafun, wisepunk, elswinger, and of course, fnarf. i'd pay good money to see keshmeshi and bellevue avenue mud wrestle.

wow, that airfare joke is funny EVERY SINGLE TIME!

The Comet sucks...great atmosphere, surly help and usually understaffed. (Does that mean, racist, homophobic bald jerk still work there?)

The Twilight Exit rocks.

nothing more fun than watching gaming nerds play games...well, watching golf or paint dry maybe...

Things to make me go:

-Having it on a day other than Thursday would help.

-Assurance that the people who are assholes in the comments aren't actually like that in person.

-Keeping it on cap hill or downtown.

I have definitely approved of the recent downtown locations, as it makes Slog Happy a single no-transfer bus ride away for just about everyone in King County.

That said, I haven't been able to go to any of them yet due to scheduling conflicts.

To be more selfish, Ballard or Fremont would be even better.

Here's my wishlist:

*North of the ship canal, for once (suck it up, Abby)

*Large, quiet place, with food

*No PBRs in tall cans; that shit is for high schoolers and North Dakotans

Hey:

The Comet has gone downhill lately--I'm for anyplace that's easily accessible to as many folks as possible. Will bike to it and then back up Capital Hill just to shut up you fuckers who say Chicagoans cannot bike up hills.

Hey Sam, isn't there a place in the U-District that has rock bank competitions? Not saying everyone would have to participate, but it could be fun...sloggers creating bands and battling!

Or, I think Lowell's at the Pike Place market. It's 1 bus from capitol hill and everywhere around there. It's quite (we could reserve the top floor), its pretty, and it has food.

@21 - most SLOG attendees, other than perhaps Mr Poe, are quite nice in person, even those who on SLOG are highly antagonistic to each other.

But we love Mr Poe. Even if we aren't Mitt Romney.

After thinking about it, I'd have to say Capitol Hill is a good idea, and it's nice to have it in a bar.

Maybe the next one at one of the performance spaces like the Fake Fur one at the soon-to-be Sound Transit station on the Hill? It's nice to move it around a bit.

and it would be nice to have Virtual SLOG Happy events in some of the major cities where SLOG has a big presence - Vancouver BC, Chi-town, you name it - they could LiveSlog what's going on and upload their Sister SLOG Happy to the Internets using the tubes.

I would love to get to one of the slog happy hours but so far haven't been able to work it in.
If I still lived on pill hill I'd have been to them all.
Now that I live across the lake, commute hours on I-90 and/or 520 suck.
That's what mainly keeps me from going.
Someday. . .

I'm pretty much up for anything. However, I will say this:

1. Having it downtown has been a good idea in the past. The one we had at Shorty's was nice because I saw some people (Fnarf, leek, etc.) that don't always make it out.

2. But then again, Shorty's was really loud and it was hard to hear people. Despite the small turnout, what I liked about Maximillien's was that it was quiet enough for everyone to have conversations without shouting.

3. Food is always a plus. Even though I usually drink my dinner at these gatherings, I enjoy having the option.

I liked the ability to mingle at Shortys and Moe's, so someplace where we could mingle and still hear each other would be nice.

Also, someplace that is achievable by bus from the Eastside in less than 2 hours. The last few happy hours took me about an hour and a half by bus including waits, transfers, and walk time. But you guys are worth the trip!

As the official chair of The Bellevue Ave/Keshmeshi Sexfest 2008, I would like all of you to know we are working diligently to make a live love act featuring the two of them, on stage at the next Slog Happy, a reality. Please be patient; hell, the monorail took numerous votes and it never even happened! That said, we're no monorail and neither BA nor kesh is a Cogswell. So there.

And no need to bribe me or twist my arm. I plan to come to the next one, even though I'm not on STM's hipster list. Probably because I'm not a hipster. In fact, if you put my legs down a pair of stovepipe jeans, I'd die of a deep vein thrombosis.

As for where, any old place will do. I'm easy. Easy like Sunday morning.

I like the one-bus away rule. I was a little put off by the loudness at Shorty's, mainly because it means you have to put your face really close to strangers to talk, something I hear some find off-putting. Or not

Posted by Lara | July 29, 2008 2:13 PM

@45 Ditto.

@47 There are only a couple of people on STM's list that could legitimately be described as "hipsters", and I am certainly not one of them, so never you fear.

I've been two three or four now, and my favorite was still trivia in the VIP. I love trivia, and I think it's a good mingling tool. You end up on a team with people, and it's fun to heckle other teams. Trivia!
@41 The Hideout is a terrible place for this. There's barely room in there without a slew of sloggers.
Also, I really feel like there are places we aren't considering that would be really good. What about the War Room deck if it's nice out?

If you can get Fnarf, Strangeways, Poe, NaFun, Dominic Holden and Jubilation T. Cornhhole there, I might step down from my mighty cloud of righteousness to attend. Add Catalina and I'll bring a tasteful dessert.

As long as it's on the Hill. I left the Capitol Hill twice in the last two weeks and did not care for it.

My schedule is pretty packed right now, so chances are I won't be at a Slog Happy until Sept or October. That said, I really liked downstairs at Moe and the one at Havana. I don't really care about location, though. Having an event is pretty key, since I don't really have much to say to you fuckers that hasn't already been said here a thousand times. I still really want to see a debate of some sort, like bag tax or Critical Mass or something else Slog gets a stiffy for. I think it would inform a lot of the debates here on Slog if everyone sat down and tried to discuss it without the name-calling and other bullshit.

Oh, and the important things are: bar, food, conversational, easy to move around to see everyone, decent lighting.

The Nightlite has that big room in the back with a bunch of tables and I think it's quieter than Shorty's. It's also central.

#21, I try to be 40% less of an asshole at slog happy than I am here in the comments. Hope that helps.
