speaking of pitbulls, i was walking across the hill today and saw the pitbull that is usually parked out in front of the QFC with a muzzle and a girl asking for change just running around loose, no spare changing girl in sight.

Sounds to me like the accident was caused by a dog owner too stupid to train or restrain her dog to stay out of the driver seat while she was driving.

Instead of breed bans, how about stupid owner bans?

Nah, let's blame plastic bags used to pick up dog poo.

This might actually be the rare instance where the dog owner will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law for the actions of her out-of-control, off-leash animal.

The Clifton study (on link) was deemed USELESS. Merritt Clifton cited 264 fatal attacks between 1982-2006, while the CDC reported 477 in the same time period.
Can you say EXPERIMENTER BIAS?

Generally speaking, when a researcher omits more than 200 participants from a study, I'd say there is likely to be a bit of bias.

P.S. A spokesperson for the CDC declared that "Breed is No longer of discernable value when predicting and preventing dog bites"

Hmmm. Slogger or CDC? I'll go with CDC Thank you:)

Typical..A pit bull looks at you cross-eyed= headline.
Any other dog KILLs and you have to read to the VERY end of the article to determine it's breed.
But, No Breedism is a ridiculous concept, right?

Posted by Julie Russell | July 29, 2008 5:42 PM

Dog "breeds" are a completely human invention. Things like "pit bull", "labrador", etc. HUMANS INVENTED THOSE.

Opposing a breed ban is like opposing a law against guns.

Thus the idea of "breedism" as something that is somehow morally wrong is absurdly ignorant and naive.

Ban pit bulls. We invented them, we can ban them.

(That's not saying a pit bull -- as an animal -- does not deserve human treatment).

er.. "humane" treatment...

Why ban a breed of dog when there is NO PROOF that it is more dangerous than other breeds?

B/C some irresponsible people own them?
B/C some people are afraid of them?

Seems irrational when there are MANY ways to promote community safety without killing thousands of dogs.

If your pit bull kills my child...

In my fantasy, I would purchase a bear trap and trip it on your face and then, with my bare hands, rip off your testicles or rip out your uterous.

In actuality, I am more likely to simply purchase a handgun and shoot you and your progeny. And your fucking dog.

How about if one of these kills your child:
Labrador puppy
English Sheepdog
Husky mix
Doberman Pinscher
Jack Russell Terrier

I ask, because these are the other "Vicious Breeds" responsible for fatalities this year.

There are just so many things wrong with the story about the puppy mauling the baby.
For one thing, 2 month old babies do not belong in swings, especially those wind up ones, and certainly not for an hour or more.
2 month old babies should never be left unattended for that long (the exception would be if the baby were asleep, and parents are in another room during that time).
If you wanna get right down to it, most responsible people wouldn't leave a puppy that young (the second article says it was only a little older than the baby) alone for that long, especially not with an unattended 2 month old baby.
I could go on and on about this one.

In other news, some dude shot his estranged wife this morning in a parking lot then killed himself. Is this not worthy of slog? Endabuse.org says an average of three women are killed every day in the U.S.; I can't find a good source of data but one website said there are about three fatal pit bull attacks per year in the U.S. I think we should just ban straight dudes, or at least make it illegal for them to possess guns.

here in the netherlands we had an pitbull ban for years, and guess what? it just got lifted because tons of clever profesors admitted that it was impossible to uphold, un-fair, dangerous, discrimitive and classist. And not to forget, didn't change one bit in the amount of dogg-attacks/serious injuries per year.
So now we are going to get an way more sensible tight law on agressive dog behauvior (basicly one stike and you'r out).
So why the hell are you lobbying for something that is already proven to be ineffective?

for the people able to read dutch: here is the goverment conclusions on the so calles "pitbull-law"

Wow. I just read the story about the lab puppy killing the baby, and all I can say is there must have been NOBODY watching either the puppy or the baby. If one of my Shelties was left in the same situation, I have no doubt that the dog would be VERY interested in the baby's swinging feet (herding dogs are interested in movement), and might even make a grab--which is why I would never leave one of my Shelties in that situation, even though they have never shown any aggression towards people.

The vacuum cleaner, on the other hand, must die.

by the way, liberals screaming about pitbulls is the same as women who only focus on the unknown man out there ready to abuse you instead on the far bigger threat by their spouses.

bring in the numbers (dutch but apperently simmilair to the usa):
66% of the incidents need no medical attantion (doctor/hospital)
64% of the deadly attacks (per year 1 on 16 milion people) are by their own dog. more than 90 percent of those in or around the owners house.
at more than half of the incidents involving minors there was no adult present.
67% of all the lethal and non lethal attacs are considerd provoked by the involved human.
20% of al deadly victims are younger than 5 years, while they only make up 6,5 % of the population
pitbull inflicted wounds are not considerd more serious than wounds inflicted by other breeds.
pitbulls are responsible for a slight higer amount of the reported incidents by the police than is considerd normal for their percentage of the overal dog population. (but so are an whole range of other dog breeds like jack russels, rotweilers, belgian shepperds, dalmations and with the hardly owned but verry biting prone turkish shepperd as overal leader)
And more importand almost all the at the police reported incidents are with unfamilair dogs attacking adults wich only make a small portion of the overal number of (serious) incidents.
dogbites are far less likly to kill you (1.2 deaths per year/7000 ER treatments on 16 milion people,) than sport (11 deaths/160.000 ER threatments) or diy home improvement (23.5 deaths/30.000 ER threatments)
your chance of dying by dog bite is considerd 1 in 13 milion.
since the mayority of the (serious) incidents involve (unsuperviced) childeren and elderly and the family dog the best way to cut down the amount of incidents is considerd education.

oh, and one more thing for you yankees to consider, in ohio a court considerd the banning of a specific breed unconstitutional.

so... doe's the oposition have numbers aside from hysteric media coverage. No? than i asame that you people are also going to lobby for an ban on being a black man based on the average foxnews broadcast?

In the link to "horrible pit bull" attacks in the original post, there's a description of an incident in which a Pomeranian killed a baby. Clearly Poms must go!

(The owner left the dog in the crib with the baby. Behind most "bad dogs" is a very stupid dog owner.)
