What Jesse Jackson Said

posted by on July 9 at 18:15 PM

Or, rather, what he whispered.

Here’s the video, and here’s my rough transcription:

See, Barack been, um, talking down to black people on this faith based… I want to cut his nuts off. Barack, he’s talking down to black people.

It may be the crudest language you’ve ever heard on a television news program (or more likely not), but it’s definitely the nicest thing Jackson’s done for Obama all year.

Obama now gets to accept a groveling apology from Jackson; he gets Bill O’Reilly telling his (white) conservative audience about how Obama’s upsetting a guy they probably already dislike; and the whole affair gets everyone in the media talking (again) about how Obama’s willing to say tough things about faith and personal responsibility even if they end up pissing off members of his traditional base.

Rev. Jackson, you just became this year’s Sister Souljah.

FUCK! I meant:

Eli, I don't see JESSE sustaining that hairdo...or those earrings!

(Christ, now I'm gonna have to deal with a bunch of clueless wags accusing me of thinking all black people look alike...ugh).

Is it a Freudian slip when you type it? Or when you deny it?

I'm sorry JTC you're going to have to publicly repent. Into the stocks you go. Then again, maybe that's what you really want. Maybe the public humiliation is what floats your boat.

mmmm Nah.

jesse fucking jackson needs to go drown himself in the puddle of irrelevance that he's been standing in for the, oh, what, last ten years or so?

Jesse Jackson is just a fucking embarrassment. Between praying with Slobodan Milosevic, blatant anti-Semitism, his affair, his embrace of Charles Taylor, and all the rest, really, this ranks pretty low, but still, he joins the ranks of idiots who don't realize when a live mic is around.

I suppose it's trivially easy for the Secret Service to keep the Reverend Jackson away from the presumptive First Testicles.

It's okay for white people to slam Jesse for slamming Obama who says black fathers are AWOL. But for white people to say black fathers are AWOL -- what vile racists. OK, got it.

i wish i could see the gesture he makes with his right hand when he says "cut his nuts off." i'd say it's the scissor snip snip.

oh, eli. you rarely ever know what you are talking about.

the wright drama was a sister souljah moment.

jackson's comment towards obama is not a sister souljah moment, it's just a dig.

a sister souljah moment must be a repudiation of extremist comments or views, not criticism of a candidate by the extremist.

please learn more about recent history and the concept of analogy before posting your ever-delightful "political commentary"

Eli, you forgot to mention that it's also going to help distract the press from scrutinizing and overplaying coverage of Obama's flippity-floppity FISA vote.

@10 nails it. This is completely not the Sister Souljah moment. He still probably needs to have one though, except that the whole gangsta rap scary crack addled felons streetsweepin' with sawed offs bullshit of the time ain't here anymore. I'm not sure a Sister Souljah moment is even relevant anymore.

@10 is correct. i'm not quite sure how you think this helps obama. hurt him? probably not much, but i don't think it exactly helps him.

Is this like, black people's day at the slog?
Angela Basset, Carl Weathers, Dark & Lovely hair care products, Jesse Jackson...

Not that I see race, cause I don't because I'm colorblind, but I feel blacksploitated. Straight up.

@10 and @12
My correct guess is that neither of you have testicles. And if one or both of you do, then they must be very, very, very small. The "Sister Souljah" moment comes in a general election not in a primary. Granted, we are technically inbetween. But I would be glad to educate you both in person. Anyway its about position and perspective. Please read about both in a dictionary before responding otherwise you'll look really really retarded.

Jay is such a pussy name. Parents should be killed for naming any child they have as such. @10--Think harder. I know it might hurt a little, but try. Okay.

Oops! A little too much happiness. @16 was actually referring to @13--Jay. Probably not a man.

@15, I know your long hours straightening out people and threatening them on the internet causes you, at times, to become a bit too fascinated with the size of fellow commenters testicles, and those are probably the moments your mom comes downstairs and asks you to stop making so much noise yelling at the computer, but, and you have no idea how much I am enjoying telling you this - you're completely wrong and in a real stupid way, too.

Next?

And Mark in Colorado, when I look up "brave" on dictionary.com, for some odd reason, I don't see any examples of Marks in Colorado threatening commenters in the great Northwest. How odd.

Eli,
I disagree completely. Rev. Jackson isn't this campaign's Sister Souljah. It may harm the Obama campaign. I don't think it will help at all. In fact, I believe that's one of the reasons why Jackson isn't talking. What he says can do some damage. I agree with many of the Sloggers, Rev. Jackson is irrelevant. The late columnist, Mike Royko put it best:
Rev. Jackson is "the fastest mouth in the West".

I mentioned on this Slog the deafening silence of Rev. Jackson this election. Well, he's loud and clear now. He, along with Rev. Wright MUST remain silent if they aren't to be a distraction to the Obama campaign.

i don't know what you children are talking about. I just want to say that this was a super-huge benefit for Obama. For those who dislike Jackson and what he represents, Obama comes off as the anti-Jackson. For those who think Jackson has something important to say, or at least worth listening to, you have Jackson down on one knee, intoning repeatedly that Obama's the best thing ever. Obama gets to be statesmanlike and say "of course i accept the great man's apology." This completely accentuates and underscores Obama's appeal as the New Politician--of the Black community but apart from its politics, able to shrug off an offensive unguarded comment, focusing on the big picture always. In the process, Obama's message in the churches gets wide play on the airwaves. No way does this hurt Obama, in any sector of the electorate.

Jesse Jackson came in second in the 1988 Democratic primaries. At one point in that campaign, after winning the Michigan caucus, he had the most pledged delegates and was briefly considered the front-runner.

He's become a joke since, but he was a serious contender for the presidency.

Jackson is a smooth talker. All you have to do is watch his interview after his more genuine comments. It would behoove Barrack if he still watches his balls. With the blend of facade, both religious and political, Jackson appears to have much masked.

Here's some more insight into Jackson's character. From http://marcambinder.theatlantic.com/archives/2007/09/barack_obama_is_not_jesse_jack.php :

"The reporter David Mendell, in his new book about Obama, has a great anecdote about how Jackson, spying Obama's daughter Sasha at an inaguration event, lifted her up and put her on a small pedestal to pose for pictures. When the cameras stop flashing, Jackson stepped away, leaving his three-year-old girl teetering on a tall block of concrete."

I was kind of making a joke that Jesse, like Hils, is just peeved because he's not the one that will be our first black President.

Tough. He should grow up.

Cascadian @ 28 - Jackson, like Obama, won the South Carolina primary ('84 and '88).

And like Obama, his lead in the delegate race was an artifact of Republican votes in states the D's had no chance to carry.

He went on to become a subject of public admiration and private derision within the African-American community.

btw, Jackson Sr. doesn't hold a family monopoly on outrageous remarks ... and unlike Sr., Jr. knew he was live on air.
