Webb’s Off the Wist

posted by on July 7 at 13:35 PM

Virginia Senator Jim Webb has removed himself from the running for Obama’s Vice President.

“A year and a half ago, the people of Virginia honored me with election to the U.S. Senate. I entered elective politics because of my commitment to strengthen America’s national security posture, to promote economic fairness, and to increase government accountability. I have worked hard to deliver upon that commitment, and I am convinced that my efforts and talents toward those ends are best served in the Senate.”

This is good news, I think. Webb might be a good Democrat for Virginia, but he had a lot of national campaign problems that would’ve been apparent all through September and October. Along similar lines, everybody make sure to keep your fingers crossed for the McCain/Crist ticket.

Incidentally, I really, really hate the word “veepstakes.”

If Beaker from the Muppets were the prize, you could call it a "meepstakes".

And I would win.

So come up with a better word.

Dodd out -- Countrywide VIP problems.
Webb out. Likes "heritage" too much.
Rendell out. Doesn't want a boss.
Strickland (?) I think he said he's out.
Clark assumed to be out.
Edwards out.

Not out:
Richardson.
Biden.
Nunn (but check out his policy on equality)
Hill-babe.
Sebelius the TV droner.
Gephardt (!?) big yawn.
Nelson of Florida??

Some general we've never heard of?

Hmm if main criterion for VP is who would be best president then who, who who would be best?

Paul, you have to take a small break from the looney tunes

@3: I wouldn't have done that title if Webb didn't already remind me of Elmer Fudd.

@1: I love me some meepstakes. You win!

Richardson, Sebelius - not bad.

Not real thrilled about Nunn or Clinton.

This just in! - McCain has chosen Jeb Bush as his running mate for McCain/Bush 08!

My primary reason for opposing Webb is that the Dems need that seat. It would have been foolish to take away such a hard won seat away so soon, no to mention his other potential liabilities.

How about CREEPstakes? Anyone here remember the Committee to Re-Elect the President?

I think that changed to Committee to Refer Elected Presidents and Vice-Presidents to War Crimes Tribunals, Jeff.

Webb's the only one with "back me up in a barfight" cred. He'd be pistolwhippin the bad guys for fun before he started crackin' rounds off.

He was the only good chance to win a few bubbas over to the blue side.

I'll take your word for it, Bob @ 9.

After what Howard Dean was saying a few years ago, I coulda sworn we were going to have a candidate like Webb at this point. After the Kerry loss in 2004, I willing to throw up my hands and go with a Southern white male DLC blue dog warmonger type, if that's what it took to prevent further consolidation by the total creepazoids.

Well, what we have now is an almost-DLC, half-white male from the Midwest. (For the folks who care about such things, that half-whiteness counts for nuffin.)

Maybe he'll win. If he doesn't? The Dems may be over. If they can't win in this situation...
