Slog - Comments on Tried to Play Scrabulous Today?

MSNBC has the pitiful story. You can still play Scrabulous for the time being at the Scrabulous site, apparently. But all my hard-earned statistics are no more. Why did I join Facebook again? Sure wasn't cause I wanted to receive pictures of eggs that would eventually turn into pictures of animals that don't grow in eggs. And don't even bother with the official Scrabble app on Facebook. You could pack up a board and a dictionary and head to a friend's house in the time it takes to load that stupid thing....

Grr. Kerri Harrop just got me hooked and now I'm jonesing. So typical. "We will protect our brand by killing it". Scrabulous was the best thing that ever happened to Scrabble, or at least since "Word Freak" came out. Now they go back to the top shelf in the closet. Good work, geniuses.

I mean I know a lot of web developers hang out on message boards but still... writing a facebook app is a greater accomplishment than inventing scrabble?

This ruined my Tuesday (not that Tuesdays don't already suck). I was in the middle of a game with my arch nemesis (you know who you are) and was up by at least 100 points. Couldn't they have at least sent out a warning first-- like "we're shutting down tomorrow because of the evil man"?

Sigh. And now I've managed to start two games on scrabulous.com where I'm playing against myself because apparently I can't read directions. This day could only get worse if time started going backwards.

Look I'm not in favor of indefinite intellectual property rights nor corporate megaliths but neither am I going to dismiss the notion of "bought the rights". Alfred Butts got his money, the next guy may not.

If Scrabble was 20 years old it wouldn't be Scrabble. And Butts got bupkuss; it's a corporate brand now, disassociated from anything. Hasbro (or its successor) will own those rights in 2108 as well. Fuck them. They're IP sharks; they couldn't invent a way to wipe their ass.
