It was fucking fantastic—beer, wine, heat, swimming in the cool river, and wandering from fire to fire, watching the chefs roast pigs and goats on spits, herring on hooks, ducks on racks, lambs in giant stew-pots, veggies on grills, and themselves in the sun.

It was also kind of decadent in its glamorization of savagery, its nostalgic recreation of the days before kitchens. By the time it got dark, people were tipsily smoking cigars and making out in the bushes, just beyond the light of the bonfire.
