American Confusion

posted by on July 28 at 9:30 AM

A man accused of shooting dead two people in a Tennessee church was motivated by hatred of liberals and anger at being jobless, US police say.

Knoxville Police Chief Sterling Owen said they had found a letter in Jim Adkisson’s car in which he described his feelings.

There were about 200 people in the church, which is known for its liberal stance, at the time of Sunday’s attack. Mr Adkisson, 58, has been charged with first-degree murder.

Children were putting on a play at the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church when a gunman entered with a 12-gauge shotgun and opened fire on the congregation.

People dived for cover under pews but several adults were hit, two of them fatally, before a group managed to overpower Mr Adkisson.

Police Chief Owen said Mr Adkisson had brought the gun into the church in a guitar case.

…The Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church describes itself on its website as working for social change since the 1950s, including desegregation, racial harmony, fair wages, women’s rights and gay rights.

Expect more of this on a larger scale when Obama wins in November.

My folks have been there. I can't even think up words to say how I feel about this.

You know... there are some times when the death penalty doesn't sound like a completely horrible idea.

Like, you know, when you blame liberals and little children for the fact that you're a stupid motherfucker.

Sounds like his economic bitterness made him really fucking cling to his semi-automatic.

If the political affiliations were reversed, this would be considered domestic terrorism.

compare the actions of the UU congregants with those of the Va Tech students - an unarmed "pussy liberal" crowd overpowered an armed assailant.

This is God punishing the false prophets.

You know that someone somewhere is saying that.

And I do believe there will be more of this.

In this man's eyes, the church finally crossed the line when it staged ANNIE. Damn liberal propaganda show.

Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church

http://www.tvuuc.org/

Are there any programs that will allow folks to help donate money and/or time to help this church and the family of the deceased regain from this?

These are exactly the types of institutions that need our support these days, even if you're a complete atheist.

Even if you just send out an e-mail wishing the TVUUC the best, and let them know that you really appreciate their strength at this time (that is if you feel that way), it would probably accomplish a heck of a lot more than posting snarky comments on SLOG for a few less seconds.

As far as churches go, the TVUUC are certainly one of the GOOD GUYS. Please offer them and the relatives of the deceased your support, however you can.

@ 7: If the political affiliations were reversed, no one would be dead. the guy would have blogged his frustrations. or voted.

@ 9: those things only cost $1.50. Unbelievable.

Heck, #12, being an atheist doesn't exclude you from being a UU. I'm a UU and we're allowed to believe whatever we like. That someone would attack my coreligionsts like this... all I can say is I blame Fox News and all the other right wing outlets that stir up hatred and aggression against liberals. Really, it was only a matter of time before their message pushed someone over the edge.

I'm an atheist, and I'm sure nobody at a UU church would want to exclude me... but why would I want to go there? If I were an agnostic, maybe...

That nitpick aside, yes, very frustrating,
and BTW, this was with a shotgun, NOT a semiauto assault rifle. If it weren't for teh gays and the affirmative action, of course, he would have been able to afford a nice assault rifle like white men used to, etc etc, insert the usual bellyache here.

Yes, this is surely Obama's fault. Screwball white men are very close to having their heads explode lately.
