Starbucked

The Seattle Times is putting together a list—hell, an interactive map—of the 600 stores that Starbucks intends to close. But Starbucks hasn’t announced which 600 stores the company intends to close, so the list is being compiled with the aid of “baristas, customers and others [who know where] the closures will happen.”

Readers with the inside dope are invited to click through to this form, where the Seattle Times asks, “Do you know of a Starbucks store that’s closing? Let us know.” Based on the interactive map, it’s clear that the Seattle Times is just taking random peoples’ word on store closings. (“Country Club Hills, IL: A Starbucks in Country Club Hills will close this month, according to a reader of The Seattle Times,” “Burlington, WA: ‘Sad, sad day when our little oasis in the community is shelved for shareholders profit statements,’ said one Seattle Times reader.”) So, hey, there’s nothing to stop you from going here and reporting stores you wish to see closed.

Dan, you're an asshole.

How about that annoying one with the giant Starbucks logo on top near Georgetown?

And could they outsource Frank while they're at it? We could hire a cheap CEO from Europe for only $200,000 a year instead, with only say $50,000 in stock options ...

I see a silver lining in this. I've visited many burbs and hills and dales in the counties hereabouts. Independent coffee shops have appeared on the scene concurrently with Starbuks expansion, even in places farther flung. So people will be able to support coffee houses owned and operated locally, though it may not be while they're shopping inside their Safeway.

Maybe one of the three in U village.

Not one of the three in U Village -- have you ever tried to find a seat in those stores in the evening? Holy crap, they are crowded. (Oh, wait, there are FOUR of them in U Village now, because the SBC in QFC is becoming a Starbucks.)

Or how about this, Dan. People could do a DDOS attack on the SLOG site, employing a bot-net to swamp it with millions of comments that are all variations on "Dan is an asshole." Cuz, you know, there is nothing to stop them. Or they could go to the Stranger's mailbox and fill it with human excrement every day. Cuz, you know, there is nothing to stop them.

The Seattle Times is helping a cooperative network to share information, and you want to fuck them up, just because you can. And to absolutely no effect other than being disruptive, I might add, because Starbucks is not using that site to track its closure plans.

I know you got rich by being an asshole on a grand scale (e.g. smearing infected snot on the doorknobs of your political opponents). But that doesn't mean it's a fine thing to do.

6 comments already and no one demanding Stabucks employees unionize for dignity, benefits, transparency and, err.... union dues?

If other towns are anything like mine, I guess the Wobblies are still bed; you've got to get up pretty damn early to start soaping Starbucks windows and vandalizing their locks to protest their business practices. And nothing says "employee dignity" like a woman with a turpentine rag on the sidewalk at 5am scrubbing "Free Trade blah blah blah" off her store's glass.

Well, Dougsf, around here the Wobblies get out of bed. I'm not sure why the ones in your town are in bed, maybe they've come down with something?

Firebombs clean up better, tho.

Whoa, Dan got RICH from his Iowa stunt? That's awesome. I'm not really seeing how that works, though. Are you sure it was the bestselling books or the column that's in hundreds of newspapers or the editing job?

FIVE stores in OMAHA? It's a bloodbath, I tell you!

Actually, I don't think there are five Starbucks in Omaha - at least not company owned Starbucks. Most of them are in the Hy-Vee's or the Barnes & Nobles. Although I think there is one where Kilpatrick's used to be. Have I told you how much I miss Kilpatrick's? It was a lovely store....
