Slog - Comments on Speaking of Flow Charts

Some of these slots are much-deserved: furries, quite frankly, are more geeky than superhero nerds. And comic book nerds are much less geeky than comic book nerds who only read X-Men spinoffs. I contend that an element of shame is a healthy thing in a subculture like this. And to prove...

It's so limited. As if the only kinds of geeks are fiction geeks. Consider that non-BMW motorcycle riders consider themselves less geeky than BMW motorcycle riders -- note this is the opposite from BMW cars! And that BMW riders who don't wear Aerostich suits consider themselves less geeky than those who do.

Or the geekyness of organic gardeners who compost vs organic gardeners who don't. There is far more geekyness out there than comic books and sci fi. Far, far more.

Well, perhaps the least geeky motorcyclist on Earth is a frat boy doing a standup wheelie on the Alaska viaduct on his way to Alki Beach on a blue-and-white gixxer 600 wearing a backwards baseball cap, a Corona beer wifebeater, khaki cargo shorts, and flip flops, with a blond bimbo on the back who doesn't know his last name. And a full-faced helmet, not worn, but attached to the helmet hook on the side of bike. That's pretty non-geeky, but those guys eat pavement and die before their mother makes the second payment on the bike, almost as if they never existed at all.

And it used to be Trekkie - Trekker - Trekfen .. but that was before speaking and dressing as Klingon became such a deal and Vulcans were more typical.

Comment by Luke Baggins

If you look at the image, you'll notice the legend says that the arrow indicates that the group at the base of the arrow considers itself less geeky than the group to whom the arrow points. The chart doesn't claim to reflect the actual geekiness of the groups, just the level they themselves perceive. The arrows pointing to the Furries are all two way. Like you'll notice that Ren Faire folk and SCA folk have a mutual arrow between them. That said, it looks like a pretty good reflection of the actual dorkdom hierarchy. Has anybody heard Margaret Cho's bit on the connection between BDSM clubs and Star Trek conventions?

Comment by Geeks In Love

Anyone who uses the Hierarchy to "prove" their status is---let's be honest here---a dumbass. What was intended as a joke is all too often offered up as a valid point in debates. That's not funny, it's stupid.

The folks who do that are (perhaps deliberately) misinterpreting the Hierarchy anyway. It's a chart of who "considers themselves less geeky than" not "who's better than." Geeks are cool and geekiness isn't something to look down on.

It's an old story, but I'll tell it again: A few years ago at a furry con I had to fortune of having dinner with Trace Beaulieu (of MST3K fame). We asked him what his thoughts were on inter-geek "my fandom is better than your" posturing that goes on, and he said it disappointed him. As Mr. Beaulieu was a sci-fi fan himself, he could sympathize as he probably got similar flak for his interests when growing up.
