Sour Grapes

posted by on July 22 at 9:20 AM

Because it worked so well for Hillary Clinton to bash the media’s love affair with Barack Obama…

I get where McCain is going with this. But he’s really running the risk of coming across as churlish and sulky (maybe even sort of grumpy-old-man-ish) with this kind of attack, which was also seen yesterday in his new campaign commercial.

Why do people—including, no doubt, many members of the media—find Obama to be such a compelling presence?

Because he’s super smart, energetic enough to hit about ten countries in seven days on his current world tour, not bad to look at, a superlative-inspiring orator, and a history-making candidate who is quite skilled at the kind of visual communication that this media age requires. I think most Americans get these underlying factors in the widespread Obama infatuation.

But by reminding people that Obama is so magnetic that even some cynical media types like him, the McCain campaign is also encouraging people think again about why Obama is so magnetic. Which naturally raises the question: Why isn’t McCain magnetic?

And that’s a question the McCain campaign really doesn’t want to answer.

Frankly, the media has a bit of a love affair with McCain, too. Maybe even a bigger one.

Don't Love
Be Afraid

When I saw a story on this on the tee-vee, all that kept coming into my head was an image of an older Rodney Dangerfield saying, “I don’t get no respect!”

The argument that Obama's charisma is somehow a minus smacks of desperation. But the contention that the media somehow favors him is completely ridiculous on the face of it. McCain gets a free pass on everything from cheating on his first wife and abandoning her and his kids to not being able to tell the difference between Sunni and Shiite, Somalia and Sudan or Iraq and Afghanistan.

There is simply no comparison on the level of scrutiny to which the two have been subjected.

Shorter McCain: The press doesn't suck my cock as much as it used to. It's not fair.

I hate to point this out, but this WILL work with a good number of assholes in my neck of the woods. All you have to say is, "Liberal biased media," and they start salivating. Anything you say after that is taken as fact.

Also, I do love it when conservatives talk about his inspirational speaking style. They actually prefer a retarded, mumbling fool to a well spoken, intelligent statesman.

McCain IS churlish, sulky and yes, a grumpy old man. You would be too if your Attends were bunchy.

McCain is not just grumpy, he has a very bad temper.

At least, when he's not having senior moments, kind of like how Reagan did in his last term ...

Let's be honest. Those in the media that have fallen hook, line, and sinker for St. Barack of Obama's charm school routine do so because they're narcissitic fools.

It's one thing to report on, or even embrace, his policies. It's quite another to let something as fleeting as personal magnetism actually influence your reporting. Absolutely despicable.

But what goes up must come down. The love affair will end (one day), and the man behind the curtain will be revealed for the pol he is: a dynamicm, intelligent, complex, deeply flawed politician who happens to have intersected with a unique time in history.

But no matter who he is, he's not an R (and that's all that matters).

Just look at Bushes success to see why McCain is running this ad. Bush was "one of us", a regular guy, and people could relate to him. At least that was his image after he bought a Tx ranch and never mentioned Yale or Connecticut again. Still, I think McCain's age will have a bigger impact than realized, and ads like this only reinforce that fact.

So, Eli, can we lift the ban on marching in Gay Pride Parades for Obama? There's still a few Pride celebrations coming up... or are they still naive dolts?

What a phenomenally stupid ad, so it's sure to work on phenomenally stupid people. But undecided people somewhere in the middle? All this does is relentlessly remind them that, yes, Barack IS amazing.

When we see a lot of people want something, the natural reaction is that we'll want it, too. That's all this ad is about! This can't help but be as bad for McCain as it was for Clinton.

i feel like this ad is the sort of thing that a certain segment of the us will respond to. the mccain camp could easily convince some people that obama is an elitist supported by the 'liberal media'

perhaps the obama campaign could respond with something along the lines of "hey motherfucker, i'm in afghanistan right now trying to fix some shit YOU broke, so i can't explain to you why being charismatic and personable makes people like you, stop trying to hit me while my back is turned."

"..Obama is so magnetic.." Hahaha what a freaking joke. He's a smooth talker with little experience. He sure is a magnet to attract brainless humorless lefties.
