A book by a "Seattle plant and tree expert," a book with the overpunctuated title Day Hike! Olympic Peninsula: The Best Trails You Can Hike in a Day, an open mic, and several other readings today. Zach Plague is at the Hugo House reading from boring boring boring boring boring boring boring, which is billed as "a typo/graphic novel." There'll be a Stranger Suggests box for this one popping up soonish, so I won't repeat myself here. At Elliott Bay Book Company, Rayo Casablanca reads from his debut novel, Six Sick Hipsters. It's about someone who's killing hipsters, and...

What do you think the deal is with these vampire adventure/romance novels? There seem to be hundreds of them published every month! Is it all Buffy's fault? Or is Anne Rice to blame?

@1 I am weary of witches, werewolves, vampires, dragons, and assorted creatures in romance novels. Others apparently are not because more and more are published each month. They've pretty much driven light contemporary romance novels off the shelf. Frankly, I blame George Bush.

p.s. That said, the author of the cleavage book is a really cool person, so "yay" for her getting mentioned here and her books are great so if you are into the genre, definitely read her.

@3: Those aren't "mocking scare quotes," I'm quoting from the press release for the reading, which is something I frequently do in the readings calendar, because I am physically unable to read every book that is on the readings calendar. Sometimes I'll quote something because it's awful, but in this case, I couldn't think of a better way to say "Seattle plant and tree expert" than, well, "Seattle plant and tree expert."

@1: I think it's a perfect storm of Anne Rice and Buffy and the fact that it's finally acceptable for women to geek out as much as men.

What the fuck is up with misspellings in the fantasy/sci fi genre? Seriously - is 'witch' such a burden? Must we replace i's with y's to seem all olde-timey or something? I could alllllmost take this genre seriously if it wasn't for this obsession with fayriyes and wytches. Just as obnoxious and unnecessary as hip-hop misspellings.
