Rafael Nadal and This Morning’s NYT

posted by on July 7 at 11:26 AM

Man, I wish Rafael Nadal won Wimbledon every goddamn day. Wouldn’t it be nice to see his picture spread across the top of the NYT every morning?

Yesterday Sloggers were discussing Nadal’s victory—and debating his sex appeal—here. And I’d like to point out that Nadal’s triumph is yet more evidence, per Hugo Schwyzer, that legalizing gay marriage is good for sports teams. Nadal’s not a team, of course, but less than three year’s after Spain legalized same-sex marriage Rafael Nadal becomes the first Spaniard to win Wimbledon since 1966. Coincidence? I don’t think so.

If we’re serious about taking Olympic gold in Beijing, well, America ought to legalize same-sex marriage ASAP.

UPDATE: Oh, and did Nike get it’s money’s worth or what? The picture I took of the NYT is a little fuzzy, but there are Nike swooshes on Nadal’s socks, armbands, and headband, and they’re all as clear as day on the cover of the NYT this morning. Now I’m off to buy some shoes—but first, one more picture of Nadal…

And a little video here.

I question the sanity of anyone who questions his hotness.

Nadal has possibility the hottest ass in professional sports. And those arms! Oh, yeah, and he's one of the best tennis players ever.

Speaking as an American ex-Seattlite who is now living in gay-married bliss here in Spain, I have to say Dan is right.

Since it was legalized (and this is no pussified "domestic partnership" bullshit, but the whole nine yards complete with marriage certificate and Spanish passport) both Nadal and our national football team have won big.

Remember this is the country that made the Spanish inquisition, um, Spanish. And when the subject of gay marriage came up the church reared back on its mighty haunches, put down the pubescent boys for a minute, and exploded with rage and indignation. Nonetheless, it became law, we started marrying, and the Mayor of conservative Seville went and performed the ceremony for two airmen in the Spanish Air Force. Then the Socialist party got re-elected after the right wing ran on a "repeal gay marriage" platform.

I am one of those people who in 2000 said that if Bush became president, I was moving to Europe. Unlike most of them, I actually did it. And today I am so glad I did.

Congrats, Alan. And I'm jealous. I have a Spokane, Washington, passport as a result of my big gay marriage, and it's nothin' special.

I have to admit when he first came on the scene, he did nothing for me. I didn't find him attractive in those pants and I didn't like how he was always tugging at them.

But I've been won over by his amazing talent, his tenaciousness and his positive attitude. In interviews, he seems like a total sweetheart and finally that Majorcan accent. Wow.

I was just surprised to find out that that picture wasn't illustrating the "Toxic Sludge Torments Bhopal" story right under. Nadal, Bhopal, it's a mistake anyone could make.

Are you people for real? He is a PERFECT PHYSICALLY and he is humble, kind, honest, and everyone praises him for his character. He is eccentric and has unusual mannerisms (as do most humans) and his includes an ice cold shower 1 hour prior to the match, being taped up always, keeping his water bottle lables parallel with the court lines, tugging on his pants, eating bananas during matches, etc. SO WHAT - IT WORKS AND HE BEAT #1 in the BEST tennis match ever played. He loves his family, his country, his town, and has had the same girlfriend for 3 1/2 years. Oh, and his millions and millions of dollars he has earned - SEEMS HE DOESN'T DESERVE ANY CRITICISM FROM ANY BLOGGERS - ESPECIALLY YOU GAY freaks who bring up your sexuality at the MOST INAPPROPRIATE TIMES! Get over your obsessions with your genitals and give praise where praise is DUE - NADAL IS KING!!!
