Rachel Maddow Rocks My World

posted by on July 31 at 16:11 PM

MSNBC doesn’t want you to see this video—because Rachel Maddow slaps Pat Buchanan upside his jowly head:

God bless Rachel Maddow—and give that woman a show already, MSNBC.

I was hoping that her filling in for Keith Olbermann a few weeks back was a trial run...

Glad she had the last word. They often just talk over her on that show.

Why must people continue to have Pat Buchanan on their shows? Wait, don't answer that.

Bullseye.

I would go gay for Rachel Maddow in a second. She needs her own show (Countdown?) yesterday.

Yeah right. No one with a haircut that lame deserves a second of TV coverage, let alone their own show.

Usually she's predictable, boring and tendentious.

unPC, you're predictable, boring, tendentious, and racist. Which makes you worse.

OK so here they fought over the quote and then the guy on the right showed Obama said something similar in public. They showed Pat is wrong to charge Obama with hubris based on an erroneous quote. Fair argument.

But she went further than that and accused him of racism, it seems, when she said the hubris line is being pushed for prejudice reasons.

WTF?

This actually shows that yes, whenever someone has a critical point to make, they get slapped with a racism charge.

Overall, the notion that he is a bit full of hubris isn't exactly way out there. His own quote acknowledges that it's not really about him, it's about the desire for change, ie, it's not really based on his accomplishments or anything like that. I mean, he's naever actually produced change. Right?

If this is the best clip you can get of Rachel that's pretty sad. Yes, she was a fighter and she slapped Pat hard. Woo-hoo; all the liberals need to learn to do that. But when she slips in a prejudice attack simply because someone says the guy has hubris, that's dirty fighting and not very intellectual really. IOW -- she can hurl some BS, too. whoopee. Not exactly a huge moment in the history of left/right debating.

@2
I'll answer anyhow. I like PJB a bit, mostly because he actually knows some history when he talks about politics. He gets put on the talk shows because he's an old-line conservative. He detests Bush, thinks McCain is a joke, and is very much a Ron Paul guy. He gives a show predictable right wing perspective without being a complete company man.

In this segment, he's obviously in the wrong, relying on the debunked article/quote. He's trying to stay on his point that Obama is arrogant. Pat feels that way because of Obama's recent European trip.

See, Pat Buchanan is an increasingly rare animal in politics- an isolationist. He thinks we need to withdraw from the world, especially militarily. He takes a long view of history, and fears that the American Empire will end like the British, Spanish, French, Roman, etc., before us. (bad endings, all) He wants to wall off America, allow just a trickle of immigrants, and eliminate foreign aid.

He's not so much a racist as much as just a curmudgeon. He hates AIPAC not because of anti-Semitism, but because that lobby coerces US politicians to pass laws to aid Israel, often to the detriment of greater US goals. If the "Arab Street" had a similarly influential lobby, he'd rail against them too. He's an equal opportunity hater.

I'd much rather have PJB on a political discussion show than Ann Coulter! At least he comes up with his own talking points, however flawed they may be.

(BTW: I voted Richardson in primaries & absolutely BHO in November!)

@9 "Prejudice" does not always mean "racism." PB's the one who started waving around the r-word. If everyone would have stopped shouting at the same time for a few seconds maybe we would be able to tell whether Rachel Maddow was referring to racism or whether she was suggesting that PB for whatever reason had taken a personal dislike against Obama.

@11 I quite like how she isn't wearing those things. Why should women have to trollop themselves up in 'feminine" thangs to get onto television?

Dan,
Good idea to do early suck ups so when she does get a show, you get a call.

It's all about Dan, Dan, Dan!

The more attention Buchanan gets, the sooner someone will point out the irony of a guy named "Patrick" writing a book about the threat of 3rd world immigrants with fucked up religious views.

Typical knee jerk conservative reaction is to dismiss any claim of prejudice or racism. Obama is acting arrogant? By whose measure? I find it either awfully naive, or willfully ignorant to ignore racial implications in this race. first black candidate in this country for president, and what? Suddenly no one is racist or prejudice? Obama does not go around accusing people of racism, but any mention he makes at all of his race or appearance, and conservatives start screaming "he's playing the race card!!!" Remember McCain's secret black daughter? That was a rumor by his own party. Remember the Harold Ford ads? Republican. So tell me why again race is not a factor in any of this? Same old repub tactics, but every time they are the first to cry reverse racism, or some other anti-PC bullshit.

@10: I agree re: Ann Coulter. She is just an entertainer. Pat Buchanan, ass-backwards as he is, actually cares about politics.

While I understand Pat Buchanan has different political views than I do, I'm sure he doesn't have a nice, grandmotherly version of the word "curmudgeon" for me. I feel like a lot of older men get away with their 'screw everybody' ideals with that cute, lovable moniker. Emmett Watson wanted everyone to go away, Joel Connelly wants everyone to go away, Knute Berger (curmudgeon in training) wants everyone to go away ad nausuem.

This isn't the 'long view of history', it's fear.

Sorry if I'm being naive, but I thought the prejudice Buchanan showed was conservative, not racist.

The bit about Mitchell Henderson was really disturbing. What kind of person takes pleasure in tormenting a grieving family?

Well. Ecce Homo probably would.

Although Rachel Maddow appears to prevail in this clip, I'm sure the rest of MSNBC's day was just filled with more of the same. I don't bother to watch any of this crap - it is never informing, just a bunch of blow bags.

I watched that. That's why I don't do gas bags. I feel sorry for people who do. They don't have lives.

I've had the pleasure of meeting Rachel Maddow twice now, at a conference I help organize - we had her do a live broadcast from the conference for an entire week. She is a very awesome person, and very personable. I hope she does get that MSNBC show.

She should have her own show, but not Countdown. She should have a show right after and get rid of the Dan Abrams abomination.

#4 She is gay, so if you are a chick, you might have a shot.
