“will be a situation where same-sex couples, obviously, are allowed to hold hands,”

How about all situations?

"Cai" is not a first name, it's an abomination. Clearly, this woman is using an acronym in order to further hide her identity.

I assume this also applies to Qwest Field aka the Seahawks stadium?

Football stadiums: 1
Baseball stadiums: 0

uh, WHAT THE FUCK?!?!?!

“will be a situation where same-sex couples, obviously, are allowed to hold hands,”

uh, dumbfucks, that situation would be ALL situations.

also, Laura and Cai: if you're open enough to want to hold hands at a public event and outraged enough to complain publicly when you can't, then it's a little sad that you're not open enough to use your last names when you complain about discrimination.

Holding hands is satanic. Next, they'll acquiesce to people who want to perform late term abortions at Qwest Stadium.

I agree with Strangeways on thi one. I am glad that Qwest management handled it.

Recently, I was discriminated against at a "neighborhood-friendly" Capitol Hill bar. I complained (by phone and then by a personally dropped off letter to the manager) of it and their management has yet to get back to me.

Picture this if you will.

Two lesbians enjoying each other's company at the True Colors concert. All around them, other gay, lesbian, and straight couples are doing the same. During the concert, a security guard from in front of the security barrier flashes a light in the direction of the two women and makes a "cut it out" sign across his neckline. The women, confused, look around to see if the security guard is gesturing at them, or someone else. Two rows behind them, they see a man taking pictures of the concert, and remember that camera equipment isn't allowed in the venue. They turn back around and continue to enjoy the show and each other's company.

this whole 'news story' seems to be totally blown out of proportion because of lop-sided reporting. have you had a security guard at a concert flash a flashlight in your direction before at a concert, and you mistakenly thought it was directed at you? i sure have. was it me? nope...its the guy a row or two back smoking pot, or the girl beside me taking pictures when its not allowed. it seems that this is more like a classic case of crying wolf without confirmation. Then, by writing a lambasting story about this topic prior to actual confirmation/denial by Qwest, you automatically make them out to be the bad guy in the court of public opinion. Because of this, we will never actually know the real truth of a situation, rather just this Montel Williams-esque soap opera.

J Wytt @10) I can't be exactly certain what occurred (because I wasn't there), but I did try to get a clear idea of what the women believed happened. According to the couple, the security guard shined his light on their faces and then directly onto their joined hands--thus making it clear what behavior he wanted to stop. The couple believes the guard singled them out because he had just taken his position at the front of the stage minutes before, and saw them holding hands, not yet realizing it was a totes gay show.

Was the security guard fired?

Why were the women so easily bought off with tickets?

@6, these comments, in a nutshell, suggest why Laura and Cal are right to withhold their last names. They need people to doubt them like this when they've already had an annoying enough experience? Sounds like they handled it in a very mature fashion, and a productive one, too. Kudos, Laura and Cal. (Though I do hate the name "Cal.")

@4 or dykes give themselves names like "cai" when they want to butch it up a notch.

Dominic: and you did this without other witnesses, a rebuttle from Qwest of the claim, or suggesting the possibility that the couple's interpretation of the situation may be highly flawed. This situation, as presented, suggests that their story is the gospel. You acted as the judge and jury without due process given to the claim. For someone who fights so vigorously for the rights of people, you seem to have forgotten that there is more than one side to any situation and that all deserve the right to defend or justify claims made against them. Instead, Qwest gets stuck with its back against a wall apologizing for something they can neither confirm or deny happened.

@ 16) I spoke to Qwest, but the reps didn't provide a "rebuttle." Nor did they suggest an alternative explanation for what occurred. However, they did say they would take steps to make sure attendees at the venue wouldn't have this sort of experience again.

As far as corporations go, Qwest is pretty progressive. Remember, Qwest was the only phone company that refused to turn over customer call records to the Dept of Homeland Security.

Just for the record, Qwest Communications and Washigton Mutual Bank have NOTHING to do with the operation of the venues that bear their names. They paid for naming rights. The stadium and its ancillary facilities (like WaMu Theater) are run by Paul Allen's company, First & Goal. The facilities themselves are owned by the quasi-public Washington State Public Stadium Authority. http://www.stadium.org/meetPSA.asp

They should auction the tickets on Ebay, or on The Stranger website, and donate the proceeds to PFLAG or the Human Rights Campaign.

No. Someone has to stand up and take the bleeding out of liberal media. The truth rarely lies in the extremes, and this situation screams it.

Just because an african american is told he has to wait in line for his order to be taken doesn't mean the order taker is making him wait just because he's black.

J Wytt @24, you're making exactly the kind of knee-jerk assumption you claim to be fighting against.

Dominic has his ducks well lined up on this one.  The evidence is against you.

I'm with J Wytt on questioning this.

Any quotes from the security guard? Any witnesses? I don't buy it.

I mean seriously, this is Seattle, it was an event to “raise awareness about the discrimination the GLBT community still faces," rainbows, pink triangles all around... I just don't buy that what they may think happened possibly could have happened.

They hired a lawyer. For what? To what ends? If this did happen as reported, just let it lie, the guy's a douchebag; a lawyer won't change that.

@25
J Wytt makes no assumptions. I work for WaMu Theater, and can assure you that he knows the facts, from me.

Just because there was no immediate defense or explanation for what happened, doesn't mean there isn't a reasonable explanation.

To All: Consider a possibility other than homophobia.

Besides, what would Laura and Cai rather hear?
"We're sorry; we will take steps to ensure this never happens"
Or
"No we didn't! You guys are imagining it. He was making sure the girl 2 rows back stopped taking pictures".

As the vice president of EAGLE (Employee Association for Gays and Lesbians) at Qwest (the communications company), I am glad to see that the article was clarified from "Qwest" to "Qwest Field."

This is very important to me, because Qwest, has been one of the most progressive companies in promoting diversity and supporting GLBT employees.

For example, in the late 80's, Qwest in partnership with EAGLE, worked to implement Domestic Partner benefits, which officially took place August 15, 1997. Qwest was one of the first corporations to allow us to have the same rights as any other employee. We also support the Lifelong AIDS Alliance and have a Qwest team in the October 4th, 2008 AIDS Walk. The list of other Qwest supported initiatives goes on and on. Qwest also already has mandatory diversity training for all employees that covers acceptance and understanding of sexual orientation and the GLBT community.

So thanks to the reporter for the clarification!
