the Pepsi Center, Denver’s convention center

or as I call it, "Denver's privately financed and privately owned NBA arena."

As long as the speech isn't in the afternoon or early evening, rain shouldn't be an issue. Late afternoon thunderstorms are what Colorado is all about in August.

Denver is sunny 300 days out of the year, so if anywhere is likely to be a good place for an open-air speech, it's Denver.

Hopefully.

I think it's a bad idea. Grandstanding. He's at the convention, he should address the convention. He can make an outdoor speech afterwards if he wants to.

Err...#1, the Avs (multiple NHL Championship winners) also play (to sold-out crowds...sorry Nuggets) in the Pepsi Center.

OMG, they might get ... WET!

Think of the poor media folks, unable to do photo ops without perfectly controlled hair!

Rain and the stadium still filled to the brim would send an even stronger message. I'd slog it out in the rain to see Obama.

Couple of nitpicks that are beside the point.

The Pepsi Center is a sporting arena like Key Arena. Denver has a convention center called the Colorado Convention Center which the Dems passed up because they wanted the oval shaped arena instead of the auditorium shaped convention center. Why, I don't know but there you go. (Maybe the real reason was security - the stand-alone and off-the-main-drag Pepsi Center is much easier to cordon off then the convention center which sit in the heart of downtown on a major thoroughfare.)

Second, Invesco Field is a new stadium; the old Mile High was torn down. There was no renaming involved, although they tossed Denverites a sop and gave the new place the offical name "Invesco Field at Mile High." But no one calls it Mile High.

Anyway, if it does rain it might be very bad indeed because summer rain in Denver typically means thunderstorms (although it's been cool and drizzly today). If they schedule it early (no later than noon) they'll reduce the risk of that.

The acceptance speech typically comes fairly late in the day, if I recall, so Brian Williams, Katie Couric etc. can get their primetime facetime.

I agree @8, the people will be there rain or shine and an overflowing stadium in the rain will be all the more supportive . . . sounds like Denver's meteorological bureau should meet up with Beijing's

I too agree with 8! It would be awesome to see such a huge crowd under their umbrellas. Rain or shine, I'd be there if I could. The Republicans better get used to cheering themselves up with these kind of sour grapes.

When moving a political rally for change from a convention center named after Pepsi to a stadium named after Invesco counts as populist symbolism, we are in trouble.

@9: "But no one calls it Mile High."
I don't know how long you have lived in Denver, but there are plenty of people who, right or wrong, still call it Mile High and many sports broadcasters who will still call it Mile High (e.g., many Denver Broncos fans, Al Michaels--Sunday Night Football, etc.). In the large scheme of things it doesn't really matter, but for someone who was born and raised in Denver and has lived most of his life here (unfortunately), reading absolutist statements like "no one calls it Mile High" are rather exhausting--especially from someone who identifies themself as being "from Denver."

I call Invesco Field the Giant Diaphragm at Mile High.
