Slog - Comments on McCain's Maverick Position on Birth Control

First (and sorry, I know this is a couple of days old) check out what John McCain has to say about insurance companies that pay for wang-stiffeners but not for birth control: McCain (laughing nervously): I certainly do not want to discuss that issue. The LA Times' Maeve Reston: But apparently you’ve voted against- McCain: I don’t know what I voted. Reston: Voted against coverage of birth control, forcing health insurance companies to cover birth control in the past. Is that still your position? McCain: I’ll look at my voting record on it, but I have, uh, (5 second pause)...

Yeah, why would a presidential candidate spend much time thinking about a silly little issue like equity between men’s and women’s health care?

Um, because there are much more important things to worry about.

Comment by David Wright

Do we need legislation requiring that any company that publishes a men's magazine also pubish a women's magazine?

I know it's a very hard concept for the left-wing brain to grasp, but insurance is not a social service. It's a business. And we allow, at least in other realms, businesses to create service and price structures that might, just might, appeal to more of less to differnt demographic groups.

Any politician who, confronted with a provision of a private contract, responds by effectively saying "uh, am I supposed to have an opinion on that?" is doing the right thing.

@11,

And you're just conveniently ignoring the fact that most people cannot get insurance except through an employer and most employers do not offer a selection of insurance plans. But, right, this is just about consumer choice.

Comment by David Wright

Keshmeshi @ 12: And you are conveniently ignoring that the domination of the insurance market by employer-sponsored plans is entirely government-induced. If the government were to tax employer-sponsored and self-purchansed insurance equally, there would be a vibrant and competetive market in self-purchased insurance.

So I guess any time you and your left-wing friends want to ensure that business transactions align with your societal goals, you can rig up a regulation that destroys competition, then claim that you have to impose your agenda since the market provides no choices. Brilliant!
