Maverick Moment of the Day

posted by on July 14 at 9:20 AM

The New York Times, reporting yesterday on part of a long interview it had with John McCain, dropped this stunning bit of information:

Mr. McCain, who with his wife, Cindy, has an adopted daughter, said flatly that he opposed allowing gay couples to adopt. “I think that we’ve proven that both parents are important in the success of a family so, no, I don’t believe in gay adoption,” he said.

The full exchange—which does little to explain why a man in his second marriage, this one to a former drug addict, has come to believe that hetero couples are ipso facto better for adopted kids—in the jump.

Q: President Bush believes that gay couples should not be permitted to adopt children. Do you agree with that?

Mr. McCain: I think that we’ve proven that both parents are important in the success of a family so, no I don’t believe in gay adoption

Q: Even if the alternative is the kid staying in an orphanage, or not having parents.

Mr. McCain: I encourage adoption and I encourage the opportunities for people to adopt children I encourage the process being less complicated so they can adopt as quickly as possible. And Cindy and I are proud of being adoptive parents.

Q: But your concern would be that the couple should a traditional couple.

Mr. McCain: Yes.

what, who expects logic or coherence out of mcsame anymore? expect more pearls of wisdom like this one before this election is over.

Well, I guess there's one rule for bigamist couples where the male partner was cheating on his crippled wife and two little girls, and another for gay couples ...

Figures.

Hypocrisy always was his strong suit.

Why do interviewers let politicians get away with phrases like "...we have proven...." without insisting on the 'proof'?

If anything, studies have shown that it doesn't matter about the couple's gender makeup etc.....

Correction, former drug addict *and* recipe thief.

Wow, can someone tell me why people still use that stupid "maverick" label with him?

I think that we’ve proven that both parents are important in the success of a family

Does he even know what the word "Prove" means? two incredibly wealthy people suceeding in raising an adopted kid proves that gays can't be trusted? Really?

Also, how many every child deserves... posts will this inspire?

btw, my question is somewhat rhetorical. I do actually know why the jerkoff media still calls him Maverick.

Obama should definitely not say anything about how ridiculous this is. He would be tainted by voicing any nuanced position opposed to McCain's illogic and bigotry.

It's because he's a big fan of the comedy-western starring James Garner that ran on ABC from 1957 to 1962, isn't it?

I believe he's named after a 1973 *Ford* Maverick - faded brown, mismatched tires, a rusty fender, torn beige vinyl roof, duct taped seats, and a musty interior smell like your grandma's basement.

That could be it.

I agree with Ellarosa; I think we're likely to see him spout off with lots of random opinions on stuff that haven't been vetted by his staff or anyone with a fully-functional cortex. In fact, it shouldn't be too hard to manipulate him into accidentally decrying divorce, too.

i thought it was because he 'flew into the danger zone'... then got shot down.

maybe instead of 'maverick' he should be called 'goose.'

@3, funny you mention hypocrisy and politicians. I just read this excellent NY Times article about how everyone, from politicians to Joe Shmoe, exhibits and excuses hypocrisy as a basic social mode of behavior.

I'll take that soap box, if you're done with it.

Everyone's doing it, Will...gahd...what's your problem?

It's like totally basic. You are so random.

I'm sure Eli's use of "maverick" was ironic. As in, McCain used to actually have some maverick-like positions, but now he just spouts the same old right-wing bullshit.

How does this man look himself in the mirror? I think George W is just too stupid to know better, but McCain at one point seemed like a somewhat smart guy.

At least it's up to the courts and the legislative process to decide.

Does he know the meaning of the word "both?" Kids adopted by gay couples do have two parents. Yes, both of them.

@11 - dementia is sad to watch. Let's hope he doesn't have more than just FTD ... wouldn't want another GOP president with full-blown Alzheimers like Reagan.

good point, @5, I forgot about that.

He says "both parents" are required, couldn't "both" refer to any two people? And if you extend his logic a little further, if two are good, then three parents would be even better!

Posted by Banna | July 14, 2008 11:04 AM

And since "both" parents are necessary, I conclude he must also opposes adoption by single persons.

Sigh....

@ Fnarf: I thought it was because he liked that Mel Gibson western movie, circa 1995...

I can't wait to hear Obama say "Me too!" Then you'll all be saying "Well, he needs to move to the center...blahblahblah"

Apparently, Cindy is quite gay friendly and may have some influence.
