Is this a "Mission Accomplished" moment?
No, this is not a problem. People are allowed to change their minds once (or sometimes more) in ten years. Blast him for opposing affirmative action if you like, but not for having different opinions about different pieces of legislation ten years apart. That kind of intellectual laziness legitimizes Republican accusations of "flip-flopping."
Isn't it time to shift to affirmative action based mainly on class?
If you are the daughters of B. and M. Obama, you do not need affirmative action.
So ...... it shouldn't be based on race alone. It should be based on "did your race actually mean you actually have had fewer opportunities?"
Kids of Bill Cosby, Colin P., Quincy Jones that Yale law professor who writes novels etc. don't need affirmative action.
Hopefully we all want to have a conversation about race and hopefully it can include this.
I think Obama also has said his own kids shouldn't benefit from affirmative action, obviously.
Race and gender? In Arizona you are a minority if you are younger than 70, continent, or can recall where you parked the car.
Flip Flop.
Don't stop.
It's the Flip Flop Bus!
I agree that someone should be allowed to change their opinion every ten years - or even more often if circumstances and knolwedge merit it. I don't even resent that McCain would level the flip flopping charge - it's a campaign after all, and we had no illusions he'd be so honorable as to debate positions instead of name calling. I just think people deserve to now it's ridiculous coming from him...he's switched on many positions, and pretending that either candidate doesn't emphasize one set of positions in the primary and another in the general election is dishonest.
"affirmative action" is discrimination..pure and simple.
Discrimination @7? How do you propose to roll back hundreds of years of inequality? Perhaps you think the market place will level things.
Honestly. In other McCain news, wasn't he also opposed to the MLK holiday in the 90s only to opportunistically invoke King's name during his address to the NAACP a few weeks ago?
@2,
When we pick on Republicans for "flip flopping", even if they legitimately changed their minds for adult reasons, it's a spoof of their having dumbed down the debate to childish levels when running against Kerry, trying to make him look all spineless, faggy, and waffly , while GOP folks are big tough guy warriors who never change their mind, because they love the baby Jebus with all their hearts and know The Truth.
Also, that New Yorker cover was a joke.
Also, a German zeppelin burned to the ground at Lakehurst NAS 70+ years ago (when McCain was a toddler), but a huge manatee did not burn in the sky.
Note to PC @3 and anyone else who thinks or implies that black people have been the main benefiaries of affirmative action--WHITE women benefit the most from affirmative action.
This is one more reason for white women to not vote for McCain.
