Every time there's a major event someone says, "Oh, I though fags, hippies, women, dog owners... were trying to make a good impression and that they wouldn't be so messy." Sorry, folks, any time you gather over 10,000 people there's gonna be bunch of trash left behind--doesn't matter if it's NASCAR or gay pride. But it's non-issue if the event organizers clean it up.

I take it Anonymous has never been to a Seafair (or any other) parade before. I am not advocating littering but don't you remember what Broadway looked like post-parade? The cleaning crews got it all in a few hours.

Perhaps municipalities &etc., based on prior experience, anticipate that there will be much litter following such a public event and budget and plan for post-event cleanup accordingly. While I don't condone littering I'll bet that some attendees have noticed that municipalities &etc. do not generally provide adequate event time facilities but do provide for cleanup afterwards. You know, with all the terrorists and other bugaboos sometimes municipalities &etc. even remove trash collection devices from public spaces during such events. Whatever.

Since "etc." stands for "et cetera" which is latin for "and other things," it doesn't make sense to put an ampersand before it.

That makes it "and and other things".

I think you can write &c. or &cetera if you like ampersands.

I'm with Lloyd Cooney - I live on 4th Avenue and, though there was trash after the Pride parade, it's NOTHING compared to what the Seafair peckerwoods leave behind.

4th ave in Belltown leading up to Seattle Center was still trashed the next morning, but by the time I got off work at 5:30pm, it was all cleaned up. I'd say that's timely enough for the situation. Good job, street cleaners!

it's unrealistic to expect any cross-section of society to hold higher values than others concerning humanity's goals (ie. clean and green, leave no trace). That being said, I too was disappointed not only in the garbage on the street but also of the agenda of "pride". In spite of society's attitude having changed, "pride's performance seems the same in your face vapidness presented for the last thirty some years.

the more trash that's spread out on the streets, the easier it is for the homeless to root through it.

Won't WALL-E be coming along shortly to clean things up for us? He compacts the trash into such nice cubes that we can turn them into bricks for the mixed use high rises springing up downtown.

I used to work in a Seattle movie theater that showed more than it's share of gay films. Any gay-themed film that was remotely "date" oriented, and those theaters were spotless when the men left. Gay women, sorry to say, typically left the theaters more trashed than kid's films did.

I lived on the Hill for years, and after pride events there was a mess, but like people pointed out, nothing compared to SeaFair. 75% of litter is probably attributable to teenagers, and pride events tend to be somewhat less teenaged than most.

I think anti-war rallies were the only thing cleaner.

i went to the last mardi gras pre-katrina in new orleans and by nine in the evening the entire city was covered up to the tops of trees in trash..trash shin deep in spots near the french quarter. they shut the city down and have crews cleaning and sweeping all night long to clean up their mess. the 2008 pride crowd of 400,000 is gaily immaculate in comparison.

Actually, tonnage of garbage is but one way of estimating parade crowds. Perhaps SoAP spewed extra garbage about to get up to the 400k estimate....

Simply math tells us that there wasn't anywhere near 400k at the parade.

Assuming that each person is 3 feet wide and they lined both sides of the 1 mile route and stood shoulder to shoulder...there would have to be 1760 columns on each side of the route, with 112 people standing single file in each column.

Now I was at the parade and for the vast majority of the route (Westlake excluded) it was lucky to be 5 deep per column or even full on both sides, especially at the N/S ends of the route.

Yes, it was a mess. I walked across Seattle Center when it was winding down, and clean-up efforts seemed to be well in hand.

Next morning, a friend of mine started going off about what a mess they'd left. "You must be mistaken" I suggested.

Later I went for a look-see. Never seen such a mess there, and that counts all of the fests in the Center's very fest-filled calendar.
