Senator Elizabeth Dole has proposed naming an HIV/AIDS relief bill after… Jesse Helms.

The headline makes sense as long as "the Dead" doesn't refer to Helms.

Which will be closely followed by the George Wallace Civil Rights Act of 2008.

She's pandering to constituents. She's also a fucking moron.

For once, I have to agree with JTC @2.

Just called her office in Washington to comment and for an explination. The aide who answered the phone basically said due to Helms' work in 2002 for global AIDS support and Bono's acknowledgement of such, Dole felt like this was a good move...I still don't think of Helms as an AIDS crusader.

Oh well as long as Bono thinks so...

That'd be like the Germans rebranding Zyklon B as "Hitler Gas".

@6, umm...no. Because Zyklon B WAS Hitler gas.

Try again.

Maybe this is Jesse's Santorum moment? I actually think it's brilliant, after the initial revulsion. Jesse Helms must be apoplectic in his little piece of hell.

I think they should name anti-gay discrimination legislation after Jesse. Or a hate crime bill. Just to be funny, 'cuz that guy was a real cutup.

I just wonder if she can propose this with a straight face? (No pun intended.)

I always loved Libby's sense of humor. Maybe this will get conservative Southern senators to vote for the bill; they wouldn't want to be seen disrespecting the memory of St. Jesse.

I love the different reactions to this. My first thought (like 8 and 9) was that it was a funny way of sticking it to him after his death. But most commenters seem to feel that it would be honoring him in some way and immediately got angry.

Ah well, different outlooks on life I suppose.

How about renaming Alzheimers after him?

I only wish a Democrat had thought of doing this first. Then it would be perfect revenge.

I've always been a bit indifferent to Liddy Dole. She never seemed quite as crazy as some of her most egregious fellow republicans.

But... has she lost her motherfucking mind?

Are you guys kidding? This is a brilliant move! It's also bloody hilarious. What Republican is going to vote against a memorial bill to Helms? It would only be funnier if it was a hate crimes bill of some sort. =)

I suppose this is similar to the San Francisco initiative to have a sewage plant named after the president...kind of.

Well, Jesse Helms didn't waste any time taunting us from beyond the grave...

Dole's amendment to rename the bill failed, but the Kerry/Smith amendment to overturn the restrictions on HIV positive people passed! Hooray! Now the House has to approve that change.
