so now we're just posting violence for violence's sake? I appreciate the agenda-based fucked-up stories (pit bulls are scary, straight parents aren't better than other parenting situations, youth ministers are often pervy...) but why stories about senseless, violent attacks, if not only to gawk and rubber neck?

I'm always annoyed when news and politicians and the public point to really whacky things and then try to draw conclusions about what this says about our world.

This woman was crazy. Period. Her brain is not operating properly.

If there's any message to be taken from this, it is that we've done a terrible job of dealing with mental illness in our society.

This is the third such atack in the last couple of years. The escalation to violence in infant abduction is an entirely new phenomenon. The profile has never previously included a liklihood of violent behavior. Strangely, at least to me it seems to correlate to both harsher sentences for infant abduction and the installation of highly sophisticated anti-abduction systems in hospitals, which have rendered it almost impossible to take a baby from an institution.

I'm pretty sure there was a Law & Order episode like this. Gah. Gruesome.

Technically, I don't think they would classify the attacker as having a mental illness aside from perhaps antisocial personality disorder. Sadists, murderers, rapists and sociopaths aren't really listed in the DSM-IV-TR as far as I know. Maybe I missed that part. Anyway, there is a legal and medical difference between being mentally ill/insane and being a crazy killer. Now I'm sure this murdering person has problems, but I don't know if *technically* insanity or having a "mental illess" is the correct way to classify this person. I don't know for sure of course, because I've never met the person AND let's hope I never do!!!

W.I.S., we can split fine hairs about the science of mental health, but it all kinda gets us back to the example of Timothy McVeigh: the headshrinkers couldn't find anything technically wrong with him, but if you look at what he did? He's fukkin' crazy.
