He Must Have Provoked Those Dogs Somehow

posted by on July 1 at 16:13 PM

I mean, pit bulls don’t just run around attacking people. Maybe this this 90 year-old’s walker had a squeaky wheel or something—because you know how those squeaky wheels annoy pit bulls.

A 90-year-old man at his home in Staten Island was attacked on Tuesday morning by two pit bulls that belonged to his neighbor, the police said.

The man, who was later identified as Henry S. Piotrowski, was bitten by the dogs on his arms and his legs and taken by emergency medical workers to Richmond University Medical Center, in the West Brighton neighborhood, where the police said he was in critical condition…. The dogs—named Brutus and Popeye—were taken by Animal Care & Control of New York City to its shelter at 2336 Linden Boulevard, in Brooklyn, and were put down by injection, said Richard P. Gentles, a spokesman for the agency.

The owner of the dogs is now in police custody, where he probably should’ve been all along. His dogs are now where they should’ve been all along too.

Thanks to Slog tipper Jon.

Dan, people pay you to put ads on this site based on how much traffic it gets. You get a percentage of every click-thru that happens on this site (like the ads that are surrounding THIS VERY WINDOW!) Effectively, you get paid as people comment (or more broadly, interact with and continue to use your site)

What, you think we don't understand how advertising works?

But I come and click and comment away anyway, so how can I complain when I'm the one who reaches for it? =]

Dan,

Your'e a speciesist pig, and I am not afraid to admit that I genuinely fear for the lives of cute little puppies everywhere when I read your diatribes against pit bulls.

One of the the things that concerned me about moving into the city of Baltimore from a college town was the increased prevalence of pit bulls. I don't want a pit bull attacking me OR my standard poodle. It's the worrier in me. . .

Yes, non. Page views matter when you're running a website—just like pick-up matters when you're putting out a print edition. Some of the stuff that goes up on Slog gets a lot of comments, some doesn't get much. If we were all and only about the comments, well, there are some posts that wouldn't be regulars, right?

We write about what we're interested in. If it gets comments/pick up, that's great. But we really don't sit here in editorial going, "Gee, what can I toss up on Slog that will MAKE MONEY FALL FROM THE SKY!" That's really not how it works.

Take, for instance, my Youth Pastor Watch posts. They don't get many comments -- hardly ever breaking 10. So why do I keep posting them? Because I care, godammit.

I love how your "research" comes from national, not local stories. If we are talking about a SEATTLE area breed ban, shouldn't we focus on WASHINGTON area dog attacks?

Oh, that's right...those might not fit in with your agenda as easily. Like the Anatolian Shepherd Attack on Jun 28th in Sunderland, the Yellow Lab attack in Vancouver, WA March 27 or the German Shepherd attack in W.Seattle in Lincoln Park (may 2008 west seattle crime blog)where the owner fled the scene.

Dan You are nothing more than an advocate for ethnic (breedist) cleansing aimed at canines.

In the 70's and 80's bullshit comments like yours plagued the gay community, deeming HIV and AIDS a GAY phenomenon..columnists wrote articles and even provided stats on how Gays were killing each other off.

Thankfully, in time people stopped listening to those retards, and soon enough they will stop listening to you too:) Shame, you used to have good things to say.

@22, I'm totally for "breedist cleansing." It's a good start... but if we get a leader advocating for annihilating the entire species*, I'll be the first to throw on a brown shirt and start goose-stepping in the streets.

See, here's why you can never eradicate the breed through robotic blog postings or voluntary breed suppression - THE PUPPIES ARE TOO GODDAMN CUTE.

I can't stand pitbulls but dammit, thems are cute pups. I'd give my teenage sons a couple for X-mas that's how cute.

All you "breedist" complainers make me crazy.

DOGS ARE NOT PEOPLE. BREEDS ARE NOT EQUIVALENT TO HUMAN RACE OR SEXUAL ORIENTATION.

Dogs were bred over hundreds of years to have very specific traits and behaviors. Pit Bulls were specifically bred to be vicious fighting dogs. Danger is in their DNA - specifically selected over a number of generations by people who were seeking that exact result.

If we could sterilize all Pit Bulls (and their related mixes) and end the line of that breed today, the world would not be missing anything other than a pack of crazy, vicious killers.

Actually, we are ALL animals. Humans (some of us, anyway) simply have the ability to reason. Just ask Socrates.

Do your homework. Pitbulls were originally bred to hunt rodents (as were cairn terriers, airdales and many other breeds) and to bait bulls(a horrible practice that LATER led to dog fighting), along with Bulldogs and Boxers. Are you suggesting a ban on those breeds too?

Can't figure out why people think it's OK to let their dogs roam free, chihuahua or pit bull. I totally narked on my neighbor for letting his four dogs run through all of our yards. Guess when one of them gets hit by a car it'll sink in.

if we bred pit bulls to be vicious and powerful but to also have other, better qualities (loyalty, protectivness, obidience, etc..) can't we breed the icky parts out again? like breeding pit bulls with australian shepherds or something. i dunno, breed bans seem fucked up to me, like creating frankenstein's monster and then being pissed that it isn't totally safe to leave with your kids.

I thought Dan (or D.J.) had a dog. Isn't it a Bichon?

What worries me is that when you ban pit bulls, everyone is going to take up Neapolitan Mastiffs or Presa Canarios or something. They're bigger and nastier.

AND, if pit bulls ARE banned, you're going to have to ban everything that looks like a pit, including American Bulldogs, American Staffordshire Terriers (basically pit bulls, but an AKC breed and since bred for the show ring mostly aggression has been bred out), Staffordshire Bull Terriers (incredibly sweet dogs--I've never met an aggressive one--but they look like little pit bulls), Bull Terriers (y'know, Spuds McKenzie) and the list could go on...

There were a couple of rather controversial experiments done on foxes a while back. The first involved breeding them to be friendly to humans. After just about seven generations (which can take less than 10 years to make for animals that reach sexual maturity in a year), the foxes were pretty much domesticated. The second, more controversial, experiment involved making those same foxes to be extra vicious, and attack. Same seven generations to make such an animal (all were destroyed for fear they would escape and breed with the wild population). Pit bulls are not so different. I think it would be an unfair assumption to deem ALL pit bulls vicious, and all other breeds as okay. It's really the idiot humans who breed the dogs to be this way - and it can be done with any breed in less than ten years. Ban pit bulls, and those same people will do the same to mastiffs, shepards, etc.

"The dogs’ owner, James W. McNair, 28, a registered sex offender, was arrested late Tuesday and charged with keeping unleashed dogs and with failure to have collars or tags on the dogs, officials said."
Nice job mentioning that Dan.

Find a degenerate irresponsible a**hole with a dog, chances are the dog he’s come by is a pit bull. They're the dog of choice for the type of people who shouldn't own dogs, shouldn't breath, and shouldn't vote. Not to mention they’re the most popular and you can pick one up without any paperwork easier than any other breed.

You want to do something constructive about dog attacks, make tougher legislation that makes owners liable for dangerous dogs. Or require dog owners to put their dogs through training, temperament testing, licensing, etc. Banning pit bulls will just make the next tough dog responsible for the attacks. Besides, you have far less chance of dying to a pit bull than a gun, knife, club, or drunk driver. I don't see people crying to ban guns, knives, table legs, and beer. But pit bulls have a media and moron frenzy around their dangers, so they’re the popular, but not logical thing to ban.

On the note of weapons, if you bothered to read the rest of the article you'll notice Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly noted that dogs are specifically trained to be vicious in some areas:
“It is an increasing concern for us,” Mr. Kelly said. “You see police officers encounter dogs virtually on a daily basis. In some areas they’re being used as weapons.”
Banning pit bulls aren't going to stop criminals from training dogs to fight, guard, attack, and fear people.

I find it irksome when people quote negative press on pit bulls without actually having a representing the whole story, as you obviously did - aside from your unexplained note:
“The owner of the dogs is now in police custody, where he probably should’ve been all along”

While I continue to respect your expertise on fisting, fetishes and other such topics which you seem to be an expert at, you’ve disappointed me with your lack of research or representation on this one. However, I know you make a living not worrying about whom you offend, which I honestly do respect – so just enjoy your dollar from the traffic this gives you. Hopefully however your readers will actually think about this topic more than you have. Also, with any luck, you’ll get more refers for the search term “fisting”, which is something we can all aspire to.
