Gov. Gregoire Defends Michelle Obama

posted by on July 17 at 15:15 PM

In response to all of this, Gov. Gregoire just released a statement saying:

I was proud to welcome Michelle Obama, who clearly loves our country deeply, here to Washington state this morning. These shameless attacks by the state Republican Party have no place in our politics. If John McCain is serious about running a “respectful” campaign on the issues, he and Republican leaders like Dino Rossi will denounce this tasteless attack ad and tell the state Republican Party to pull the plug on it immediately. After eight years of the most divisive, fear-driven politics this country has ever seen, I agree with Senator Obama that it’s time to turn the page and bring Americans together.

And for those who’ve missed what’s gone on below, the governor is talking about this new video from the Washington State Republican Party:

and it was SUCH a pithy comment.

i'll try again:

Thanks for the wild turkey and
the passenger pigeons, destined
to be shit out through wholesome
American guts.

Thanks for a continent to despoil
and poison.

Thanks for Indians to provide a
modicum of challenge and
danger.

Thanks for vast herds of bison to
kill and skin leaving the
carcasses to rot.

Thanks for bounties on wolves
and coyotes.

Thanks for the American dream,
To vulgarize and to falsify until
the bare lies shine through.

Thanks for the KKK.

For n*gg*r-killin' lawmen,
feelin' their notches.

For decent church-goin' women,
with their mean, pinched, bitter,
evil faces.

Thanks for "Kill a Queer for
Christ" stickers.

Thanks for laboratory AIDS.

Thanks for Prohibition and the
war against drugs.

Thanks for a country where
nobody's allowed to mind the
own business.

Thanks for a nation of finks.

Yes, thanks for all the
memories-- all right let's see
your arms!

You always were a headache and
you always were a bore.

Thanks for the last and greatest
betrayal of the last and greatest
of human dreams.

Hmmm...now this will get more attention than it deserves.

In the Republicans' defense -- and I don't say that very often -- it was pretty lame of Michelle to have suggested that she had never been proud to be an American. I mean, honestly.

So the GOP is in favor of waving the flag, reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, singing the National Anthem at ball games and hypnotically intoning the word "freedom" over and over while the cameras roll? Well, I'll be damned. Whoda thunk?

Pride is one of the seven deadly sins. So, if you are a for real ass Christian and proud to be an American: shame on you!
By the way, love the Burroughs quote. How apt! And who was it that said patriotism was the last refuge of scoundrels?

@3 for the win. but close second @5.

Kind of funny that they feature State Sen. Val Stevens in this piece. She's one of our state's most notorious bigots. Just listen to some of her floor speeches and other statements in opposition to the gay rights and domestic partnership bills passed by the state legislature over the last few years. Since when did criticism become an "attack"? When you are in politics and you say something as dumb as what Michelle Obama said you will be criticized. Democrats have no problem taking it to the family members of Republicans (i.e. the Bush daughters)

None of those proud women were very good at reading their cue cards...

The Washington "GOP" decides to slither through the mud, as expected.

@4 - Kind of like how John McCain said he never really loved his country until he was a prisoner in Vietnam? I mean, honestly.

I have to admit, this seems like fair game to me too. I mean, it's not the classiest ad or the most issues-based, but it's not even really a low blow.

Please do tell. How and when have Democrats been taking it to the Bush girls?

I should add that this "don't pick on the wives!" stuff always smacks a little of sexism to me. I mean, maybe if Gregoire's husband had said something ripe for attack by Rossi we'd be hearing "don't pick on the husband!", but I sorta doubt it. Men, you know, can stand up for their own opinions (which they undoubtedly have).

We won't support ball-less NO-Bama and will re-defeat him in November!!!

@13

All you have to do is take a stroll around the lefty blogs and forums to find all that.

Regarding this particular video and article this is not an ATTACK. Criticism of someone who is actively campaigning for a Presidential candidate, family or not, is and should be open to criticism for things they say on the trail.

Obama supporters just get up in arms about all this crap because they can't handle criticism of their messiah candidate.

So they got a fat white chick, an Aunt Jemima, a Barbara Bush wannabe and an Oriental Closet case to talk about how "proud" they are - using the typical cliches that the retarded expect.

bunch of bitches, that's what THEY are.

I'm an Obama supporter, btw. Perhaps you could clarify by saying "a certain fringe element of Obama supporters"? Nah, too calm and reasonable.

17: Kindly feel free to exit the discussion; the door's to your right. Oh wait, you appear to already be headed that direction.

Now having watched the whole thing, all I can say is:

"If you have to wear a flag pin to say you're patriotic, you never served, but swerved."

And you can take THAT to the bank. Before it defaults under the Bush/McSame collapse.

Leek, just because they got a bunch of ugly bitches you get your panties in a bunch at me? Exit your own damn door, bitch!

Did that woman just say she is proud to be an American because America has shed more blood for freedom than any other country?!?

Sweet merciful crap!

Lori Sotelo is reading her frankly bland reason for loving America off of a cue card... Which is hilarious because it was pinched directly from the national anthem.

"Did that woman just say she is proud to be an American because America has shed more blood for freedom than any other country?!?"

Yes, stunningly, she did. And as an aside, she's not even correct. If you count the number of people who have died in a war for their country, the highest death toll is probably in Russia, perhaps China. And if you only include democracies, then Britain.

Val gets a two-fer on the moron score.
